Now for another set of very interesting facts-How many times has the Birdsville Track been closed, either to all vehicles, of open to either four wheel drive vehicles or to four wheel drive and heavy vehicles. It should be noted that that the last category has only been functioning since early 2010 when the new automated sign system came into operation. The figures for 2010 are only up until 23rd November 2010.

From Marree to Mungeranie

2009

2010
Closed to all traffic 53 days
Open to 4WD only 60 days
Open to 4WD/HV 19 days

The Cooper water level is now rising at the ferry site from local rain only and has risen 150mm in the last month. The floods from Queensland have not had any impact as yet and when they do arrive, will see the ferry in operation until at least the end of April 2011. Until these last floods in Queensland, it was hoped that the ferry would cease operation by mid December 2010, but now it is impossible to say how long it will run for, as we all know, it will not stop raining in our outback regions.

This will be the last Ferry figures update for 2010 and I will be able to have our next lot of figures in February, due to my contact have time off over the coming weeks.

To all those that have been following my reports since March when there were very high hopes that the Cooper would flood over the Birdsville Track, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and please take care on the roads over this very busy time of the Year.

Cheers to All

Stephen, it would be interesting to see how many CT's and vans went across on the back of a truck.

All the best for Christmas.

Hi Dave
Firstly Seasons Greeting to both you and Nora.

What CT's on the back of that truck?? Surely you have read the rules...LOL

# TRAILERS CANNOT BE TRANSPORTED SEPARATE TO TOWING VEHICLE
# TRAILERS MUST REMAIN HITCHED TO TOWING VEHICLE WHILST ON FERRY
# THE USE OF A QUAD BIKE TO LOAD / UNLOAD TRAILERS IS NOT ALLOWED

Now all travellers with trailers and Campers will be $50 richer after crossing the ferry.

I am just thinking out very loud now, but it would be great to have a gathering of EO members at the Ferry Site near the end of its operation in 2011 and give it a giant farewell for all EO members.

Cheers

Hi Stephen, thanks again for your efforts in getting and passing on all this information, I am also glad and fortunate that Hubby and I were among the Nov figures.
Your idea of an EO gathering at the Ferry sounds fantastic but unfortunately after our not so little excursions of 2010 I don't think we would be able to make it.
Merry Christmas to you and yours and have a wonderful New Year, stay safe.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

Best wishes from me too. Your posts provided the inspiration for me to go and see the ferry, and the wild flowers at Roxby Downs. A fantastic (although brief) trip but plenty of photos to reflect on the special 'green outback' of 2010.

Regards

Hi nrb1748
Yes it was a great experience to see the outback areas the way that it was this year.

Great to hear that you were able to see it first hand.

Seasons Greetings.

Hi Marion and Ron

Firstly Seasons Greeting to you and your family. This next body of water that is coming down will be very interesting and just how long the ferry will now run for even has Transport SA unsure.

One good thing I suppose that if it is to the end of April or later, many more people will get to add there vehicles and occupants to the statistics.

Seasons Greetings

We have so enjoyed your figures Stephen - and the fact that the Cooper is rising again from the local rains - we are waiting to see how much comes down from the Qld floods.
Just for something else to think about - it was announced in Qld papers this week that 'they' are wanting to make the Cooper catchment covered under Wild Rivers - submissions to be in by 27th April 2011. Then it will only be a matter of time before the Georgina and Diamantina will be under submission.
Thank you so much for doing your figures.
Have a wonderful Christmas and we will SEE you in the New Year.
We do like the idea of a meeting at the Ferry before she finishes - when she finishes for this season.

Hi Ruth, Ian and Jan
Yes the figures are very interesting indeed, considering that the best figures prior to the running of the ferry in 2010 and now into 2011 were for the period of July 1990 until January 1991. They did not have the road closures like we have had this year and the figures for that 6 month period was 3665 cars and only 10,155 people.

Just think what the above figures would have been if it was the normal dry year and we did not have so many closed days on the Birdsville Track.

On another matter Ruth, we will have to get back up there to have a ride on the newly lengthened ferry..LOL

I will be playing it be ear, but it would be great to have a reunion back up at our old camping spot, but this time we would be staying longer.

All the Best and have a great Festive Season.

Regards

Stephen and Fiona.

PS to Ruth
Patsy was down last week and they have finished grading a new track out to Lake Hope and are starting soon on the netting out on Lake Hope. Patsy said that Billy was up at Etadunna at the moment. See said that they have had a few very big fish out in the lake, but they are still very small at the ferry site. This will make Ian want to get back there sooner....

Just looking at you gallery pictures. That picture in the Simpson looks very much like that PVC marker on the Colson Track, am I right or wrong??

Hi Jan
We have done all the tracks of the Simpson many time and that picture looks very much like this marker on the Colson Track.

As you know, there are usually very little man made features out there and when we came across this marker, we had to see what it was. First impressions as we walked to it was a housing for a rain gauge, but it just contained sand and a dead spider. If this was the same marker, was there anything in there when you inspected it?

Cheers
