At around $40, the 100k NATMAP DVD covering a lot of the continent at 100k:1 seemed a bargain compared with the its 250k predecessor. But - take a look below. The image has been scanned from the paper maps, colours are soft, blurred and pixilated. Compare the screenshots of 100k and 250k. Reckon we'll continue using the 250k.

Hi Val
Thanks for the comparison. I have wondered why they were so much cheaper than the 1:250,00, now we know why.

Cheers

Yes

Spotted the sad resolution back in August when they were released - discussed here

GPS Australia 100k Thread

Resolution is disappointing but not so bad they can't be used - there is useful extra detail in some areas. There is a high resolution version but not sure of its availability to us mere mortals....and of course there are some other 100K map sets (of select areas) available that have a good resolution :)

Cheers

Yes I too was surprised to see the low quality. Dissapointed is probably the mildest reaction I had. :-)

Total waste of money.

Thanks for the heads up. We were looking at the GA 100k. Not for a while now though.

I wonder if the reason is that a full set of 100k maps needs to be at that resolution to fit on a single DVD?

Hi
It comes on two DVDs - but yes - its all to do with a comprimise between file size and resolution. Figure it would take about 5 or so DVDs to hold a good resolution set.

Thanks for the 'heads up' J & V

I was disappointed enough with the 250k purchase recently, in the lack of detail I expected. Lost interest when I couldn't find a few places of interest we visited on our 'Goldfields Loop' trip, and haven't really got back to it.

Only 'win' I guess was the 'free file sharing' aspect. When I contacted Natmap in a panic cos I was unable to register the programme, I received the following response:-

'If it is just the registration ……………….
You are no longer required to register the NATMAP Digital Maps 250K 2008 (formerly NATMAP Raster).

So I have passed it on to son and SIL to use.

Compliments of the season to all

Thanks for the post. I was considering purchasing but the $40 put me off !......just didn't seem right considering the previous cost of the 250k........something did not add up..........if something looks like too good a deal..........look again

John,
Would you mind putting this review in the actual shop item also please that way people will be able to see the comment at time of purchase.
Thanks David.

Boy, at $40 a full set of Oz 1:100k mapping it's a snap. Some people are hard to please :-)

I use this map all the time as my default map (I have had a test copy for two years); it's far more accurate when on remote and faint tracks. I'll pass on the res. issue; for me the actual (readable) detail is far more important.

Cheers.
