Lake cobbler access road.

Hi ,

i am planning a trip into the high Country and was wondering whether anyone can advise me whether the track from Abbeyard to Lake Cobler is suitable for a camper trailer.

Would appreciate all comments and advise.

Hi,

It has been a few years since I have been into Lake Cobler via Abbeyard, but for memory there were a lot of steep climbs which were hard enough without a trailer. I think you could have some serious problems if you are forced to reverse down some of the hills. You could probably get a trailer in via Bennies without much trouble. I have taken a camper trailer into King hut via Bennies without any trouble.

There has been torrential rain and even snow recently, i doubt the grader boys have had a chance to clean up the mess. I would give parks a ring.

The latest from Parks Victoria is that the Lake Cobbler – Wabonga Plateau (Whitfield) area is closed due to washed out bridges on key access roads and the likelihood of extensive track damage at Paradise Falls / Sandy Flat Camping Area / Top Crossing Camping Area / Lake Cobbler Camping Area.

PV also says that reopening of these areas is yet to be confirmed.

It is probably a good idea to give this area a mess until it is all fixed.

As already said from the North via Rose river & Bennies would be the go.

I would not attempt it via the King River & the Southern approach with a trailer. Some steep rocky stepped sections & very tight hairpin bends.

You might like to check out the Parks Victoria website beforehand as my friend who lives up that way reckons a lot of bridges have been washed out so best to get the latest update on that before you go. Its a really great place to visit & the waterfalls should be at their best at the moment IF the track is open that is!

Good luck.

Cheers

I forgot to add that if your feeling fit the walk from Lake Cobbler to Mount Cobbler is a must. You will be rewarded with a 360 deg unobstructed view of the alps.

When you get about 3/4 the way up you will come across a "false summit". Cross the saddle & resume the climb up the true knobbly peak of Mount Cobbler for what I reckon is one of the best views in the whole of the alps!

It will take about 3 hrs up 2 hrs down max. Take water & lunch in a day pack & make a day of it. Of course pick a nice day or you might just find yourself in cloud & miss the wonderfull view.
