Have you looked at
Travelmate? It is useful for travel directions, distances and approx travel times.

Go to
Places and you will see you can create your own route using the Driving Directions tool to plan a trip to or from anywhere to anywhere. Lots of interactive online trip planning in this section of the site -
Places.

Hi Mark and Shaz, Not sure if the the Trip Planner on the RAC site is the same as the RACV web site, but, I have planned all our trips over here in the east using the trip planner on this site. We recently toured from here in
Melbourne through
Broken Hill,
Bourke,
Charleville,
Longreach, Emeald,
Toowoomba,
Brisbane,
Chinchilla,
Roma,
St George,
Cunnamulla,
Cobar,
Hillston, Griffth back to
Melbourne. It let us plan this whole trip before we left and also gives fuel stops,
camping spots etc. Every now and then it hiccups, but I find it a great tool for planning trips. You need to be a member of the RAC/RACV to use the facility but I find it great. I hope this helps
Happy
trails
John

I've used maps.google.com extensively to plan our trips, and have just finished working out a rough itinerary for our 2012 around Australia trip using maps.google.com. You can annotate your maps using google's custom icons to point out different features, get driving directions and timings, and also research things in each area (accom, tourist
places, etc.)
I've used their numbered icons to indicate how many nights we plan to stay at each place, and their tourism icons to point out things of interest.
Have a look at my map here -->
