Have decided that real courage is taking an angle grinder to a new car - espically when it can have cosmetic ramifications.

Ultimately we brought our car for dependability and this means keeping the weight down so the winch has to fit within the existing bumper - no bullbars as per the previous Patrol.

But I gotta tell you that approaching a new car with an angle grinder with
everybody saying , "It will look ugly - take it to a professional etc etc " takes
a bit of doing - but hey there is still time to ask Santa for a new bumper if this one goes pear shaped !.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Will be in high country at Talbotville christmas to new year , say hello if your around !

Robin

Hi Robin,

What did you use as a cradle to hold the winch to the chassis?

I'm thinking of doing something similar but with an old ally bull bar to the 80 series.

Also what do you think of the Tigers winch?

They also supply a universal winch bracket "U" shape bracket Ozrover $95.

You cut to length , it takes the winch but front hawser doesn't quite fit and you do your own chassis holes etc - bit of a pain and more use for angle grinders.

Haven't fired mine up yet - but brother has similar model and its good.

There are different versions I got the 12000lb lightweight item which is less powerful than the 10,000lb model which has a longer motor.

$845 all up with syn rope etc isn't to bad.

Thanks Robin,

I'm not convinced that a heavy, expensive bull bar is really necessary, the couple of accidents that I've had with bull bars fitted have done as much damage to the vehicle as would have been done if I just had a normal bumper bar.

Robin,
I really think you should get a piece of door edgeing from clark rubber and go around the new cut.that will make it a truly professional job.
Is that the 19 kg winch?
big difference when compares to 42 kg for wire rope 12000lb jobbie.
thinking of going same way with new vehilcle as dont want to change suspension just yet.
cheers

Hi Howard

Yes , I weighed the actual winch tonight without rope at 17.5 kg.

I cut the rope down to 20 meters , as 28m is a bit much for drum , and its easy to wind up this rope in a knot.

The shorter rope usually means a little stronger pull , at the expense of using winch extension sections - I think this is a good trade off.

Just fitted 30mm spacers to my springs , also good trade off to counter accessories weight etc and buy time till I can sort things out properly.

Have you any pictures of the front of the Patrol with winch installed?

I am only just getting my head around "hacking" my 99 patrol, let alone a brand new one. You must have a rather large set...
