it has a roof console going back about 2 or 3 foot with 3 drop down storage areas and one larger drop down, plus some lights

Hi
Have you ever thought about getting an IPod or using an Flash Drive instead, and running that trough the stereo you have in the dash. Trust me it's a much better idea, better sound and no problems on the rough stuff. A lot of the new ones including JVC have a USB port in the front of the unit so you can just plug it in. We got rid of our 6 stacker a couple of years ago and haven't looked back.
Cheers

Yes but hard to watch DVd's on an Ipod.

Presumably he wants it for the kids in the back to watch.

The answer to your question maybe is get a pair of the DVD screens that attach to the back of the headrests.

They are a lot cheaper than the roof consoles as well.

I dont think there is any that attach to irregular surfaces

Most get screwed onto one of the roof battens and therefore have a fairly flat surface.

Thought of that, and it may be the way I go, but I also thought if there was one to mount on the roof console it's less things laying around in the car and also it could be viewed by all 4 of my kids in the back seats.

Problem is I have 2 kids still under 2 in car booster seats for the next 6 years and they sit in the seats directly behind the front seats, so if I have 2 screens that hang off the head rests they will be directly in the line of fire for wandering fingers, and the 2 older kids in the rear will have a harder time seeing the screen.
If I put the screens on the rear seat headrests so my kids in the very back can see, then there will be cords dangling everywhere in the middle section.

Still, even with all that I may just have to do it that way.

I recently traded my Pajero (with roof-top DVD) for a Triton. Decided against the roof top DVD for the following reasons:

1) Cost - $1000+
2) Very expensive to fix or replace if it breaks out of warranty. If it can't be replaced, then you are left with the holes etc from the installation.
3) Can only watch one movie at a time - might not suit all of the kids, depending on age difference.
4) Each kid still needs an infra-red head set - cost about the same as an individual DVD player.

I had two cig lighter sockets installed at the rear end of the centre console, and got some seat back organisers. Bought some cheap ($79) Dick Smith DVD players. Now the kids can watch their own movies, or plug in I-pods, DS players, and still have somewhere to store them. There is very little problem with cords, as the outlet sockets are within about a foot of where the players are. (Also, they don't need to be plugged in all the time, as they are rechargeable.)

Including the installation of the additional power outlets, the total cost to have four individual screens plus the flexibility of other devices would be about the same as one roof mounted DVD player.

I have a roof mounted DVD on my cruiser, it replaces the centre interior light and has no holes so can be removed down the track with no problems. I fitted it myself and took time to make sure the trim panel matched the contours of my cruiser, looks factory IMHO.

I thought about headrest mounts and other alternatives but am very happy with the roof mount. Is totally out of the way when not in use, connects to the cruiser stereo if you want full sound or, my favourite, is the cordless heaphones and not a peep out of the kids :)

When looking at roof mounts, I have found the non-swivel ones best. On my GU dvd player, the swivel was good to face one child but it had a lot move wobble and was too jerky to watch on rougher roads. The fixed position screens are a lot more stable and my current dvd has minimal wobble in comparison.

Cheers
