Hi Guys,

I just moved to Atherton (and in fact to Australia) and am planning on spending my holidays from Dec 29th to Jan 2nd 4WD'ing from Townswille upto Atherton via the following NP's - Great Basalt, White Mountains, Porcupine, Blackbraes, Undara Volcanic and Forty Mile Scrub.

Is this possible in a light unmodified Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000) model? I will be alone.

The basic (very rough) route is called townwsille-atherton 4wd and is at @

Any advise or changes of route -including don't go there it is not possible in the rainy season or to dangerous are more than welcome. Also which park should I spend most time in - I can miss out on the northern ones as they are less than a day from where I live and can visit over a weekend.

best,

Strongly suggest that this year it may not be a good idea - It is very likely to rain and flood, You may get stuck in quite a few places out in that country.

Not many place we can suggest to go this time of year in the North

Cheers Tony

Ok...thanks Tony. Yes the weather is crazy. Will probably just take the main road back to Atherton then and finish off my Project Management course...would Townsville-Charters Towers-Torrens Creek-Hughenden-Lyndhurst-Minnamoolka-Mount Garnet-Atherton be doable?

I came through Malanda a few hrs ago.

Hi ceylon,

I live in Townsville and my advice is to stay put OFF the roads.

The weather station is predicting the low will dump ~4-500mm of rain between Cairns and Mackay. With the amount of rain we have already had in the area I can see plenty of creeks flooding etc. The last thing you need is to be stuck out somewhere when more flood waters come down. Whatever you do DO NOT TRY crossing a flooded creek!!

It will be very wet and already many roads are closed - including the Bruce Hwy . You should check this government website showing road closures before going anywhere:

http://131940.qld.gov.au/Home.aspx

The authorities are asking people ro restrict travel to essential travel only. Maybe wait until it dries out a bit..The way it is looking it could be a while.

Enjoy Christmas in Atherton :-)
