Hi Folks!
Have not been here in ages but thought I would tap you collective wisdom with something new (not) - a tyre question.

I have two sets of wheels - Steel wheels with muddies and some alloys for on road around town on the black stuff. I need some new tyres for alloys on the bitumen.

I was thinking about a set of HT tyres though I guess I could get AT's. Not that keen on the Dunlop Grandtreks and thought I would ask about recommendations for HT tyres for a 2001 TD Landcruiser. I might go for AT's if there is a good argument.

Must be a couple of years since I have looked at EO so nice to be back. I did look under search but decided to post!

My BFG A/T's have done 60,000k mostly towing so I would put another set of them on if I was keeping the vehicle.

Also have a set of wheels with Grandtrek and Yokos on which havent worn anywhere near as well

Toyo opats are a great AT tyre or Bridgestone 694's. I run Pirelli scorpion ATR'S as my street/winter tyres on my 2001 TD 100 series. They were about $280 each, really grippy especially in the wet.
I have Pro comp AT 305/70's on alloys for summer and the pirellis sit on the steel rims (dont get used much),

Dont waste your time or money with any HT tyre.

Hi Andrew

There are AT tyres with an LT rating these days and also quasi AT with a lower load index rating.

My BFG AT's are a real LT but my new car came with Bridgestone D693 they are labelled AT but really aren't as have lower index rating.

But they are a good tyre for the alloy wheels and have some credibility off-road.

Hi Andrew,

I currently have a TD 100 series Landcruiser, and like you have some off road tyres on steel wheels. But on road, I run a HT tyre on the standard alloys

For the HT tyre, I looked at a few options, but went with Cooper HT's. I've had these on a previous vehicle and was impressed with the mileage, general handling and quietness of the tyre. I also bought them in Passenger construction, as these won't be going off road.

A couple of the alternatives I looked at included Cooper ATR, or a Bridgestone D694 (both available in P or LT construction and original sizing - for me 275/65/17). But I went with the HT's in the end as I also got a good deal on them.

Good luck with your choice.

Cheers, Mark.

Aside from the above , I use Pro-Comp A/T tyres on long distance bitumen roads and on sand. These tyres have passed all my expectations and thrown in a few pleasant surprises as well. A grossly underated A/T tyre. For serious off road work have always used Goodyear Wrangler MTRs and these have taken some punishement and more, yet never let me down. Lousy for highway driving as the noise is intolerable.
