there are others with better advice on the 4wd side (I prefer manual myself offroad) but the A750F 5speed auto on the cruisers are a renowned box, very strong and reliable.
I personally havent heard of a failure though Graham H(I think) had some probs when his was serviced by someone who didnt know what they were doing.

Toyota says not to touch it (even oil change) unless overheated or leaking. Mine has 210K on it and still is crisp and smooth.

Hi Rooey,

I used to be a "it must be a manual to be a real 4WD" type of guy, but after having an auto 200, I wish I had seen the light years ago. I have yet to come across a practical scenario where a manual has an advantage over the auto. While some complain about downhill engine braking, the 200 TTD is better than my GU Patrol ever was - and thats before I switch on the Downhill Descent Control on the 200!

Cheers

Captain,
push starting and towing come to mind.

Autos are the ducks in sand but you have still gotta convince me when it comes to super steep decents, if they had lockup then you couldn't beat an auto.

Have a safe one

Hi Rockape,

Well... I cannot recall the last time I push started a vehicle, thats what jumper leads are for ;) But in theory that is an advantage, mind you have you ever push started in sand?

Also, not sure what you mean by towing, an auto is far better for towing a load IMHO, or do you mean when getting towed? If so, again I cannot remember the last time i was towed so more a theoretical advantage, but take your point.

As for super steep descents, if the V8 engine braking isn't enough then the Downhill Descent contol is actually better than engine braking as it can brake individual wheels. But, rather than comparing to a 200 auto, when compared to any auto in general, then the manual normally does have the downhill descent advanatge.

While one can try and split hairs which is "better", the real winner is being out there just doing it, doesn't really matter what you have got does it?

Cheers

Captain

Ha push start...

Dare anyone to push start any modern manual diesel or petrol, unless your battery is 11.50 volts you will not start....

Autos are better for towing and for the bush... tell me any that have good down hill gearbox braking, except jeep and land rover...

Austos have it over manuals....

Just fishing, it is the holidays after all....

Captain,
sorry I didn't explain myself better, yep I meant towing as in recovery and I was just pointing out the difference's between manual and auto.

If you have a V8 cruiser and the starter motor fails you will want it tow push or tow start because you ain't gunna change it in the bush that's for sure.

As for the comment by Tony, we push started one about 4 days ago.

Know what you mean about the downhill decent, works great until the electronics have a hissie fit.

You also pay a fuel consumption penalty with the auto

Put lock up in the trans and then the auto beats the pants off the manual.

Have a good one

Rooey is talking about an 06 TD.
AFAIK these never came with Downhill Decsent Control or similar trickery, so irrelevant really

G'day Tony,
My manual 1Hzzz was fully loaded to leave at Cullyamurra (Innamincka) and it would not turn over. I was near the edge of the waterhole and managed to push it forward a few feet to the slope, and let it run down the incline on the sand, it started 1st attempt in 3rd gear. I only had a solar panel backup to charge my batteries. I carried a high lift jack so if it failed to start, I planned to pull it backwards and try again. There was no one else around.
Billy Goat Bluff track I needed to drive it down the hill in 1st gear low range. If i used 2nd gear LR, I needed my brakes as well.
I had a new electric brake controller fitted, and the Auto elec didn't fit the resetting CB. With my 3 tonne van around the Adelaide hills it blew the fuse, and again I was happy to be driving a manual with fantastic engine braking.
In the auto department my (now sold) european car self destructed the auto before 100,000km and then again at 130,000km. (ZF Auto)
My current EL Ford 1998 with 105,000km. The auto was replaced this year after it went to limp home mode. I thought the EL being well used as a taxi vehicle would have lasted longer than this.
So you guessed it - a manual for me.

Cheers,
Bill

I go along with you there for sure, I only got the TD100 auto cos they have such a good rep and theres little alternative to the auto.
Any other 4x4 I'll stick with manual thanks.

The thing I dont like with the 100 is in the sand (what else is there north of perth!) its hard to feel whether the wheels are beginning to dig or just that the sand is softer and auto is slipping more.

Yep auto for me and always tow the van in 4th, ALWAYS.

and yes it should only have WS oil in it

If its got that stamped on the drain plug thats what it needs and only Toyota have it.

A description in the user handdbook about it.

Mines Ok now after a so called EXPERT put Transmax in it.

I also work on the truckies theory on hills.

Use the same gear DOWNHILL as you used going UP.

Easier on the brakes.

Dont do recoveries in reverse or the front diff may blow.

Apart from that IVe done 65,000k towing and havent even had a puncture.

Thanks for that Graham and other posters been a big help! I will be driving on sand for a bit as currently living on the coast in the Pilbra but the rest of the things you have all mentioned is a little luck of the draw!!
I am a bit concerned about what people have told me for the fuel consumption, the auto being thirsty by a couple hundred KM's?
Cheers Rooey

I get 10l per 100k at the speed limit when running solo and about 17.5l per

100k when towing a 2850kg van at no more than 90kph.

Mine has a chip and a 3" mandrel exhaust

Am more than happy with it in all ways Will be sad to see it go in about 7 months
