Iam off to Peppermint Grove Beach near Capel in a couple of weeks with some friends for a few days and was wondering if anyone knows the area and what there is to do and see. Any good fishing spots etc. Any info would be great.

hi glenok
its just authority rumour -imho

you will find that it was just the usuall media report put out every year warning of the risk of catching rrv
avoid camping under peppy trees they are a mozzie habitat
if anything the risk should be a hell of a lot less this summer because of extremely low rainfall and hardly any pools of water laying around
its a bit like the risk of a heat wave they like to blow there trumpets
but it does'nt always happen
cheers

Hi

The recent warning is indeed almost an annual event and may be construed by resident skeptics as the Health Dept crying “wolf”. This seasons warming was however prompted by the recent detection of the virus in mosquitoes in the south west (Mandurah ?) and high tides in the estuarine areas between Mandurah and Busselton which have created breeding habitat despite low rainfall. Having said all that, I would not be overly concerned by the "warning". Take the appropriate precautions and chances of getting the disease are pretty low – something you should do, warning or no warning. The area has are large permanent population of people - haven’t seen them running from the area screaming in fear :)

Cheers
Greg

hi explorer
i'd like to advise you that i'm not a skeptic just a down to earth bloke who has listened to these annuall reports
it's the old scenario if they didn;t warn people
they would be accused of not doing so
same as reporting the weather
imho
you've probably got more chance of getting run over xing a road than getting rrv
cheers and have a good one

I live down in the South West and would be more worried about the flies at present than any threat from Ross River Virus. Just take the normal precautions such as covering up at dawn and dusk if there are mossies about.

Would invest in a fly mesh that goes over your hat and head though. Can buy them at the BP station in Busselton if you can't find them anywhere else.

Thanks all, not worried about a few mozzies, lived up north for 20years had our fair share of warnings to do with ross river etc, the media do seem to get carried away sometimes hey. Good reminder though to cover up at dawn and dusk.

Flick a line off the banks of the Capel River anywhere between Roberts Road Bridge and the river mouth. You have a good chance of picking up a couple nice Black Bream if you are patient.

Prawns in the shell work fine, rock crabs will keep the pickers away and bream luv them, up to an inch across the shell are good. If they are hungry hard or soft lures will do the trick.

Have fun, Neil
