Hi - I wonder if anyone has ever driven this Road/Route from either Ghan
Heritage Trail end to Stuart Highway or vice versa.
1. I know nobody can advise/tell me what the route will be like when I go in May/June next year but I just wondered if anybody would give a general view of it's difficulty for a 4x4 with appropriate tyre pressures especially when crossing the river beds.
2. Is it possible to traverse northwards off the Maryvale Road/Hugh River Stock Route northwards to get to
Rainbow Valley. I can't see a way through on Google Earth.
[I realise the access road to
Rainbow Valley turs eastward further north along Stuart Highway-I just wondered if anybody knows a way northwards into the
Rainbow Valley from Maryvale Road.]
Thanks in advance.
George

Gday,
There is a track that leads East from
Rainbow Valley to the railway line, then South down the line to Idracowra Station (crossing the Maryvale road). Ive been that way as a short cut to
Chambers Pillar.
Saying that...........you travel through Aboriginal Land/ Railway corridor/ and private property so you should get permission.
Cheers

Last time I spoke to the girl at Idracowra Station (Judith?), she said access was closed and the property was being sold. That was a few years ago around 2007, so things could have changed.

I should have added the track from
Rainbow to the line starts from the
Rainbow entrance
gate and goes along the
Northern boundary.
Bluefly,
Your right....they never did like people taking that track but it may have changed.

Hi George,
We travelled this road mid 09 with no problems at all - its a good condition gravel road. Though after this years rain the
creek crossings may be a bit more washed out. We looked for a track to get us into
Rainbow Valley - there did seem to be a track leading off from the railway crossing but the signs were a definite deterrent so we did not try it.
Cheers,
Val

Hi Val - thanks for that. I have found that track on Google Earth - of course I can't see any 'signs' from my Google
vantage point. I imagine it's "Keep Out - Tresspasser Shot" that sort of thing so I'll look carefully when I pass it.
There does also appear to be a vague track off northward through a 'gap' in the range along the Maryvale road - it seems to exit the range about where the
visitor centre appears to be (on the ground) in the Ranibow Valley Conservation
park.......may have at look at that as an alternative to getting "shot" by going the other way......ha ha

PS - I've tried to find a contact email/fax/phone for Idracowra Station without any luck - wonder if thre's a email/fax/phone on the
sign?
Appears to have sold for over $7m in 2007 - wonder where the money came from......?

Hi George
Providing that the area has not been wet, all those tourist roads are usually in good condition and you should have no problems at all. The Hugh River Stock Route is a good drive and
well signposted from the Maryvale Road.
If coming up from Finke, then go to Chamber Pillar first, then head noth to
Alice Springs. You will then come to the Hugh River Stock Route Road, then follow that. To keep the peace with the Station people, do the right thing and head for the Stuart Highway and then go into
Rainbow Valley from there, the extra distance will not take that more time, and all above board.
While you are right in the area, have to thought of doing the
Owen Springs Road as
well, as it is
well worth the drive seeing you will be driving straight past?
Cheers
Stephen

Thanks for taking the time to upload the pics Stephen. I imagine the turn off west of the Stuart Hwy to
Owen Springs is by the Correctional Centre - or at least somewhere along that stretch. I expect we could eventually find our way to the Alice via Larapinta Drive if we took the route through
Owen Springs

The track to
Owen Springs appears to go through a
creek bed (traversing the Watervale Range?) and it looks great from the air.-that's south of Old
Owen Springs.
Did you go that wayStephen? What did you think of that secton?

Hi George
When we did the Own Springs Drive, we did it from the north and headed south.
There were a number of good spots along the way that would have made good
camping spots. Again the track when dry was a very easy drive and a good alternative to get off of the bitumen and to get to
Alice Springs.
Here is a screen dump of the Hema Red Centre Map and the areas that you wish to travel.
Cheers

George,
Like Stephen, we've enjoyed the
Owen Springs track. We often call in to Redbank
Waterhole because its only 6km off the Highway and is an easy 2 days drive from
adelaide. And we get a nice
bush camp instead of an
Alice Springs Caravan
Park!

The back road into
Rainbow Valley is on private property, with warning signs to tell you to keep out. It follows the railway line north for about 7ks then cross the line and head west to
Rainbow Valley. I went that way 8 years ago when there were no signposts from the eastern end. Did the Hugh River Stock Route again this year - easy drive.
There is a nice
waterhole just to the west of the railway line crossing.

Hi Phil - I imagine that
waterhole is just west of the new Ghan railway line crossing on the Hugh River Stock Route?
Thanks for that

Yes thats it. We arrived there for morning tea and stayed the night! But there had been a fair bit of recent rain. But lots of birdlife and fish in the
waterhole. magic spot.

Hi each
Thanks very much for the comments/help - I've got all that in the Garmin now-we'll take the
Owen Springs route into Alice then back to Finke taking side trips off down Huge River Stock Route and
Chambers Pillar - will leave
Rainbow Valley for anothe time.

Hi George
We returned from
Chambers Pillar via the Hugh Stock Road in 2008, with our caravan. No problems, just needed to be aware and slow down for some creekline dips (a bit washed out) on the least maintained section, but really an easy drive. The track into
Chambers Pillar was the worst road of the drives; sandy patches not far from Maryvale Station, and some sections further in rather corrugated.
We understood access to
Rainbow Valley was from the Stuart Highway only. I saw no evidence of tacks approaching this colourful feature from any other direction when there.
We took the
Owen Springs drive without our caravan, and were glad, as the sand crossing the river bed would have been hard going.
The
Henbury Meteorite impact craters not far along the Ernest Giles Road may also be of interest to you.
