Looking at a vehicle for our inlaws and came across a 97 Pajero V6 jap import today with low klms (for the age) in a tidy condition
I believe it was imported around 2005
It has lots of stuff that the Aust deivered ones probably didn't have such as rear aircond,auto aircond,ajustable shocks,sunroof,etc and this concerns me as i know with Toyota
grey imports that the extra stuff can cause drama's with parts availability if they need to be repaired
Wondering if anyone has thoughts or experiences with this model as far as reliability goes with 100,000 klms on the clock and expecially how helpful Mitsubishi dealers are when you ask them for parts for a
grey import
Also no record of a 90k service being carried out so not able to verify if the timing belt has been replaced
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Don, I had the regular August build 1998, NK GLX 3.5L quad cam auto, bought at 124000k, sold it at 232000k, still going strong. Didn't have the rear air but factory sunroof fitted. Only sold it because we need a tray-top to pull a 5th wheeler.
I did my own servicing and apart from the usual tyres, one set of brake pads; timing belt service done too, it only cost me a coolant temperature switch that needed a dealer computer-diagnosis to find out why I was experiencing high idle occasionally.
Towed our 2 and a big bit tonne caravan over 40000k in the six years we owned it. Loved the car, did everything we wanted it to do and a
well built vehicle to boot.

Beware that
grey imports often have the dashboard reprogrammed or replaced with one with much lower klms before sale in Aus. Its an easy thing to do if you have the equipment.
If it was imported privately, the klms might be genuine.
Don't expect any support from Mitsubishi Australia. Ring a service department, I did some years back when looking at importing a mitsubishi. The parts guy said, that they did not have the CD's for the imports, so could not guarantee he could hand over the correct part, so would not do it. He was obviously anti imports and didn't want to help. I said I was just looking into it and he basically said that some parts might fit but who knows, and also started to tell me the service department would not be interested either, since they have not be trained on that model of car.
Another dealer might be different. Give them a ring and see.

No way it has done only 100,000km.
Grey imports routinely have the dash reprogrammed. 200,000 would be more likely. And check that it isn't the "GDI" (Gasoline Direct Injection) quad cam version of the 6G74 motor. Clever technology but it was never available here and thus parts supply will be tricky.
Do you parents need rear A/C, adjustable (& probably shagged by now) rear shocks & a sunroof? If not look for an AU delivered one.

Looking at the overall condition i think the klms probably are genuine
The seller who is a dentist & said It was imported in 2005 and he purchased it around then and left it at his holiday home in the vic snowfields to use on their fly in/fly out holidays so he has done minimal klms in it since it was imported
They don't need all the extra toys (and i told them there is the potential for these things to cost them a lot of money to fix if they fail) but we looked at some more basic aust delivered ones today in the same price range 7-10k and they all had higher klms 160k+ and were looking a bit ratty with general weaqr & tear
If this one was aust delivered with a service history it would be a reasonable buy

Was lots of Pajeros imported into NZ from Japan and lots suffered from cracked heads. Probably more in the Diesels.
At one time a head could cost $7000 if you could get one.
The dealers over there would support them and had the parts Cd's.
Lots of parts from Toyota would fit an import of the same model but some that looked the same werent.
I was going to buy a Corona import when I came here but it was twice the NZ price and no one would insure it.
Bought a ST 170 1998 Corona diesel in 1994 in NZ and when I took the glovebox out I found a page from a logbook that was 4 years old and had trips on it that had an end mileage several thousand K's more than showing on the car.
It took only 20 mins and two small screwdrivers to clock that one.
At one time all the Jap imports had just under 60,000k on them but it was proved that some had been clocked at least 100,000k.
Some dealers lost their licences over it.
BE WARNED.
