Hi all, I was going to have a crack at the Zucchini and tomato relish in the 'camping chef' book however I'm looking for an alternaive to keeping the end result in bottles/jars. I try to avoid taking glass in the camper if possible. Is there a 'p.e.t' alternative or ? could you cryovac it. I guess if we are only going away for a week it will keep in the fridge and I can 'bottle' the rest. What does everyone else use for longer term storage that resists breakage? ta. doc.

The wife always puts ours in bottles, when we go travelling usually place a small amount of bubble wrap or something similar around the bottle and place in a container so that it can't move.

Yep,
That's exactly what I do as well as put it into plastic bag in case it does crack & leek. We also line the bottom of the container with bubble paper & lable the top of the bottle or jar on the top of the plastic bag it's in.
Take care, keep safe.
Bye for now Ma.

No glass in the OKA.
PET is best if you can find a suitable shape.
I carry scotch in PET bottles.
HDPE is second best. Some "canned" fruit (SPC???) comes in square HDPE containers with screw on lids. Just be careful that they seal well.

We do have one "exception" to the NO glass rule. We carry a bottle of "special" bubbly for our wedding anniversary. It is packed in a "long neck" wet suit style stubby holder.

Cheers,
Peter.

Hi
If there are times when we have to glass container (Fiona like her strawberry jam on toast), we put them in stubby holders and the holder acts as a good shock barrier.

Cheers

Hi Stephen- yes that is what I am doing at the moment- putting the glass stuff in stubbie holders. I was just thinking is there a plastic alternative prefabricated- like the plastic pet bottles for home brewing beer? I have wondered if I could use some of the existing plastic containere- such as the ones that peach slices come in- however I am not sure the lids would seal very well. doc.

Hi Doc,

We do try to avoid carrying glass but sometimes its unavoidable eg a jar of jam or bottle of port or similar. The only breakage we have had was a bottle of tokay where the bottom just fell out and made a horrible mess. We have never tried the stubby trick.

We save any square shaped plastic containers eg from CSR golden syrup/treacle or from "canned" fruit and use them as they pack together well. But we have found that even though they have good screw tops they will sometimes work loose on severe corrugations.

Cheers,

Val.
