The hilux has started to make a metallic clunk noise when you first take off. Sometimes also happens when changing up gears (usually only 1->2 or 2->3). Sounds like its coming from the back of the car. What I've seen on the net so far suggests the universal joints need new bearings. I've been a bit lazy with the greasing of these so it's not a surprise if they died.

I ventured under the car and tried to move the tailshaft but the joints seemed solid (no movement).

Could there be any other things that could cause this noise.

Thanks...
Michael

could be a miriad of things, mainly in the area your looking. Unis should be fairly obvious, tighten the tailshaft flange bolts, the diff flange centre nut could be loose, wheelnuts, brakes dragging or even the leaf spring shackles.

Trying laying down on the ground next to it while someone rocks it back and forth in 1st/reverse to get an idea where its coming from.

Had a similar problem on the Patrol. Turned out to be the rear trailing arms had ben incorrectly tensioned after work had been done on the rear diff housing. Tightened them correctly and problem disappeared.

My 75 series trayback started this after about 120k.km.
A more frequent than specified greasing of the rear universal joint seems to prevent it.
Now at 250k. there is still no evident backlash in the uni., just that very metallic clunk when taking off, and as you say 1-2, less often 3-4.
Hope this of some help.

I had a very similar problem in my 80 series (metallic clunk on taking off, sometimes when changing gears, and intermittently when driving especially uphill) and couldn't find any fault in the driveline. It turned out that the rear pinion had lost preload and was clunking around. Apparently it is quite a common problem- an hour down at the driveline shop fixed it up. It might be worth a look in your case!

Pump some grease into the splines on the tailshaft.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
