Evening All

I trust that you have all suitabley recovered from the festive period and ready
to discuss the niceties of life!

I am considering the fitment of a winch to my aging GU patrol, not so much as I
am considering getting aggresively 4wd in my older age but rather as an
addtional form of insurance for solo travelling and providing some peace of mind
to myself and the co pilot when travelling in the more isolated parts of this
great brown (read - wet and soggy !!!)land of ours.

I was originally considering installing a warn winch on the advice of my 4wd
service Guru, however the the cost of about $2.5 k set me back a bit. Further
research showed up a plethora of options mostly of chinese origin. I am now
leaning towards the Ironman 12,000 lb winch which should provide sufficient
capacity for the Patrol and attached Aussie Swag should we become a little
stuck!!

I am looking for any feedback from members with winch experiences (no not
wenches!!) and in particuler those that may have used or exerienced the Ironman
brand.

All comments appreciatted.

Phil

We put a repco 10.000 pnd winch on our 80 series before our big trip. It scull dragged the cruiser and trailer through gunshot and a couple of other spots around oz. Never had any trouble at all with it. Paid around $600 (mates rates). I ran it out regulary between uses and wound the cable back on under light pressure and often sprayed with wd 40. A mate has the ironman winch and is very happy with it. I think he got the remote with his.

Ps. My repco winch mathed perfectly with my mates warn, all bolts ect the same spot. looked the same, did the same job, cost 1/4 the price.

Have a look at these:

I don't have one but they come highly recommended for the price (circa $800 I think). Simon from 4WD TV rates them also.

Good luck with you search and travels.

I'll give the Tigerz11 a thumbs UP! A good winch, although I have only had to use mine once, several mates have them and all have favourable things to say about them. One spent a few days this year winching his way along one of the tracks up the Cape.... I forget which track.... either CREB or OTL.... whichever is the slipperiest!

Cheers

Brian

Most of these winches apart from the expensive ones like Warn come out of China. I have never used one as I have a Warn. There are companies in Australia that import winches from China (and other products) and put there name on them. I have seen a Chinese made winch pulled down for a pre fit service onto a Nissan ARB winch bar the protective heat sheild over the motor was a flattened out Fanta Can with Chinese writing on it. You pay for what you get & I don't think I would like my vehicle hanging off one of these "Warn copies" on the side of a steep mountain track.

I got one of those cheapies from Supercheap .... I hope never to use it , but you never know ..... if it gets me unstuck once it's good . I can't justify spending the money for a Warn and never using it - I guess time will tell ..... at least it can pull the dinghy up on top of the ute !

We have been supplying/fitting the Tigerz11 product for sometime now and i find them hard to go past as far as value for money goes.
Have also used the ironman product as well as warn but bang for your buck, tigerz11 looks the goods. Great product support also, something i can't say for some of the other brands on the market.

I have a 9500 lb terrain tamer on my GU, very happy with it, good quality and direct copy of the warn so parts interchange etc.

$900, cheap insurance.

I have a Premier on the LC100 and a TJM 10000 on the Troopy. neither has had a lot of work but have both done the job when needed. Make sure you get a snatch block and learn how to use it. Takes a lot of strain off the winch when things get tough.

Have seen a few adds for winches with synthetic rope rather than wire at around the same price. Much nicer to use but you need to take care.
