Over the past few days I have been trolling the web to find information on road closures in southern Queensland due to all the flooding. I had limited success until last night when on the news a Qld government web site was mentioned. It was just what I had been looking for and would be invaluable to others in the same predicament.

Something worth book-marking for future reference.

Qld road closures

We use this one too! The only thing I have found with it is that it doesn't show up all of the road closures until you zoom more closely to the area of interest. There is also no key- does anyone know what a purple line or a pink line means?

There is a similar site for each state- if you google (State) road conditions it will come up. On some of them (eg, NSW RTA live traffic) the viewer is directed further to the Shire website for a more comprehensive list.

They are a great resource :)

Amy,

I think Pink lines are open to high clearance and Purple is open to 4wd's??

Also not all Shires have current road closures and limits.

Cheers Kev

Problem is it shows roads closed up to three days after they have been opened, especially out our way, South Burnett. RACQ uses the same info, I am not overly impressed with them.

I agree - we were stuck in Emerald recently for 4 days due to road closures and if we had relied on the RACQ website we would have been stuck there another 4! UHF worked better for us.

It is not very good with up to date info. I've been sitting at several road closures in the north in the past week and they're not shown until much later on the website. Some have also opened while I've been waiting but this takes quite some time to update. There doesn't seem to anywhere better for updates though.
Even the ABC radio seem to read their updates direct (word for word) of this website.

Hi Kent, Some updates for this area now done. Unfortunately as this is an unfunded free service we do not as yet have the resources to cope with a flood of this magnitude. However we do have the best technology to report these conditions LIVE if we can encourage the local authorities to use our system. Interestingly enough Kent, the ExplorOz Road Conditions Report is actually Live and Interactive and the only site in Australia which has the facility to be updated live in the field by anybody with even a laptop or smartphone and access to the internet. (as I have just managed to update via my iPhone the Bruce Highway and parts of the Qld Coast). I am currently traveling in the area (admittedly with limited internet access and time) and have first hand experience of the Bruce Highways current conditions and impending closure at Rockhampton. The only limitation ExplorOz has in a crisis like this is getting the word out that the EO system is tried and proven and can provide literally up to the minute updates as conditions change. As others have mentioned the existing reports are outdated by the time they are publicised. Also anybody can leave a comment or feedback on our reports to add any new new info they may have to the existing reports. EOs system - certainly worth writing home about, don't you think?
hope this helps

Kerry,
Great to hear that EO is a sophisticated system. Now all we need is for the authorities et al to use it.
Cheers
