G'day wandering drew, I had a problem like this once, and it turned out the battery lead had parted company from the battery clamp inside the cable insulation.

Also a lot of these older vehicles have a fusible link in the wiring between battery and main harness. It looks like a short piece of wire with a terminal on each end of it..sometimes there is more than one.
Dont use any old wire to substitute it ...replace it with the correct stuff. Should be available at most auto leccys ...or just go genuine.
HTH.

See if you can find a remnant of the old fuse wire.It will help to find the correct amperage.
My landcruiser(which are similar in this respect) had the same problem. They all seem to go when they get old if something else
doesnt blow them

Might add to my original post here also I have put in a Dual battery system on my old girl and The problem I was addressing before whatever went was finding out how to disengage the interior lights from the starting battery and have them connected to the 2nd battery bank has anyone done this to a coaster of my age? I was thinking to remove the original fuse wire and replace it with a new one from the 2nd battery

Perhaps you may have set the duel battery up in a 24 volt set up as apposed to a 12 volt set up, therefore you may have blown all the fuses.

something else to consider....what about replacing the interior lights with L.E.D.s??
there are kits available now (from Jaycar..to name one) that will fit in the original lights..so leave your wiring as it was and install LEDs. Use bugger all power and last a lot longer. I have done all the interior lights in my Patrol now....and when we are
camping the tailgate doors are just left open while ever we are up ..as the fridge is in the back. Have been left on for hours and hours...and no probs firing up the ole diesel next morning
Just a Thort.
HTH.
