HI Everyone,

We have just brought an older jayco swan off road camper as we are heading out to outback QLD and the territory in april for 7 weeks.

We would like to take the camper out for a couple of trial runs and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to where to go? We have 2 littlel ones under 4 and we like to bush camp, not having facilities isn't a problem. We like to be out bush away from everything if you know what I mean and have a real camping experience.

We live in Ipswich and don't really want to travel more than 2 1/2 hours. Thanks in advance.

Katrina

Try Landcruiser Mountain Park out from Kilcoy. It is great.

Blackrock camping area at Bundjalung National Park NSW, but drive slow (written off hilux against 2 trees after 20 years of driving that access road).

Because it's a coastal ground your young ones will be in heaven with the beach.

One big bonus is the "black rock" is compacted black sand so if you fall from a height you can break a bone but for toddling smallies there's no cuts and lots of pools and caves.

The other bonus is at night round the campfire you can have wandering bandicoots with no human fear wandering through your seats.

Can thoroughly recommend it, and they have camper trailer and caravan specific sites. Those sits say no fires but you know, there's lots of charred pits and the ranger comes late morning ...

thanks for that. Sounds really nice. One question is how far from brisbane is it?

About 2.5hrs but getting quicker every year with the bypasses they are always building and opening. You want a camping spot near a beach cutting so you can be in quite open bushland, that is, waste high, but having a camper you will have all the shade you need.

It can be very hot in summer so I'd put off going there until perhaps March. There's no water, no shower facilities and pit toilets, and sometimes no firewood, so its rarely packed out.

And the bird life is spectacular.

Hi there Katrina, we are from Beaudesert, you could try Flanagans or Big Riggen which are both about 30-40 mins south of Beaudesert (about 100 mins from Ipswich). Another really nice spot is Lake Broadwater which is just west of Toowoomba. We have 2 kids under 5 also and prefer Lake Broadwater as there is a playground straight out of your van door.

Thanks for that Shane. Was thinking of both of those, just to go there when its not a long weekend. We don't like the idea of camping ontop of one and other. We were going to go there last easter and they said they were expecting about 3000 campers!! Lake Broadwater sounds great. Never heard of it before. Thanks once again.

Hi Katrina, try Gordon country near Warwick, it is big enough to find your own spot away from others. Also has a great freshwater creek and 4wd tracks. Cheers Mick

I am a fan of Levuka. You can take dogs and it is usually cool at night with the altitude.

I go to South Balina Beach Caravan Park.....2.5 hrs from Brisbane, can have powered site, or use the bush area with no power etc. Walk to the beach, and can drive on the beach with no permits required. Can have dogs. We love it.
