Doug
I have had one for 3-1/2 years now...85K on the clock. I can tell you they are not cheap to service. I get mine done every 5K out here in the bush and the costs have varied from $500 to $1400.....Still having said that I havent had any big problems and it gets a hard life. You just can't break um.

Doug,

if you are fortunate enough to be near a Toyota dealer, they have a fixed cap service program which, provided you are within their time frames, caps the service cost at $320 or thereabouts (That's 10K services).

Cheers Mick

Thanks Skippype for your input.

and here's an email reply from a bloke that's been at my place.

Doug

That is certainly bull. I have over 100 000 k on mine and the most I paid for a service is at 50000 and at 100000 where they change gearbox and diff oils etc etc etc and these cost me around 800 for each service. I have heard that replacing injectors is expensive but one does not need to worry about that any more often than with the 4.2 diesels. I cannot fault the V8. In over 100 000 k towing this van which is 3500 kg I have averaged 17.6 litres per 100 km which is better than I was getting with my 4.2 towing a tent trailer.

Norm

I would hope Noel K will add a post too as he drives one at work,

G'day Doug,
What on earth are you doing worrying about V8s at 3:30 in the bloody morning!? Aaarh... you want to plug your Ecorout in. Well why don't I come down there with the V8 and my Ecorout plugged in and you drive within 10 meters of me and you can read it on your GPS? It'll save ya 60 grand.
Having driven the previous 6 cylinder turbo and the V8 (both GXL'S) on and off road I found both to have ample power and a pleasure to drive. However if I had a choice of one or the other I would go with the 6 cylinder. I don't like the way they seem to have shoe horned the V8 in, it is very compact should you have to try and work on it. The starter motor is a mission to get to, and all those hoses under the intercooler that you can't see should they start to leak, coupled to the fact that there is no radiator cap!
I feel the V8 has become too technical to be classed as a simple, reliable, off road work horse that the 6 cylinder was. All this technical stuff does come at a price and cost to maintain. I may be sounding old, but I'm still younger than you Doug, (not hard) and believe that an off road work horse has to be simple so that with a bit of knowledge we at least have a chance to get it going to get back to safety.
This is only my opinion of course. When I look at your troopy and it's simple 4.2 litre motor and then look at your speedo... 740,000 klms I wonder, how much it would cost to get a V8 there... if it can.

Doug,
they are paying around $700 at work for an injector and I believe Toyota recommends the common rail pipe work has to be replaced at about 150000K because of the high pressures.

You could save a lot of dollars in labour if you did the bearings and oils yourself.

Hi Doug

I am on my 2nd V8 Diesel Trayback with no problems so far.

The service costs are capped at $320 for the first 60,000 at all Toyota dealers.

After that the 70,000 & 90,000 is around $300-400

The 80,000 & 100,000 is around $900 as they repack the wheel bearings etc.

I have had no problems with the injectors

The #200 also has a v8 diesel albeit generating considerably more torgue and power – I presume it’s the same engine but tuned differently.

I wonder if the 200 has an issue with the servicing interval for its Injectors?

Does anyone know?

Cheers,
