When I started my Hilux 2006 SR5 Turbo Diesel the other day I could hear a knocking noise that seemed to be coming from the inside the dash near the middle. The noise happened about every second, a similar noise to someone knocking gently on a door. I got out and lifted the bonnet and couldn't not hear the noise while the motor was still running. It happened while at idle and driving. I turned off everything else, AC, radio,no wipers, etc. I had put it into 4 wheel drive that morning for a few minutes for some gentle work.
I spoke to the local Toyota mechanic and he said that there is nothing inside the dash that could be making that noise.
Has anyone else had something similar? or do you have any ideas.
Thanks in advance
Wato

Probably one of the Gremlins trying to get out!

I had my fan do this one day however I note you mentioned you turned everything off? If it doesn't happen anymore however the fan would be the most likely culprit. Failing that sounds like something was loose?

hi i had a simular experience in one of my 4x4 navara's and after causing me regular concern and like you kept trying to find what or where it was coming from
i pulled the interior fan out and found a small gum tip in there and periodically it would move to where the fan would just hit on it and make a knocking sound
but not all the time
the gum tip had some how found it's way in through the outside vent and into the fan area
cheers hope thats all it is

Hi Mazcan
I didn't have the fan on when the noise happened. Or do you mean something else.
Thanks

G'day Wato,
Do you have any additional equipment/electrics in the Hilux?
We had a similar problem last year, and found it was due to bad connections at the auxillary battery. The auxillary battery controller has solenoids or something in it that were cycling due to the poor connections, once we removed the aux battery terminals and carefully cleaned them it was ok.
I couldn't locate the source of the noise at all, I was confident it was coming from under the dash, but was in fact coming from the controller mounted on the rhs wall in the engine bay.
Just a thought, and good luck.
Rob.

Hi RobnJane
Yes I do have a second battrey, which is located near the fire wall. I could not hear any noise when looking under the hood. I would
check again but the noise seems to have stopped.
But if it comes back I will
check the 2nd batt.
Thanks
Wato
