Hi all,
Please excuse me if there is already a thread created about this, I'm a newbie :)
For the last couple of years we have made do with camping in a 4 person dome tent, we haven't been camping in extreme weather or anything so it has done us
well. But after our last camping trip we moved around quite a bit and camped near
the beach..... now I think the tent is coming to an end :(
We want to get a heavy duty tent, and one that isn't going to take forever to set up and ideally we would like to be able to stand up in the tent also.
We have been looking at the Oztent, but we find when pack up it is too long, as we would like to be able to fit this in the back of a 4WD ute (approx 1.75m long).
There is only 2 of us and a dog haha No kiddies.
Any suggestions??
Oh and aren't we looking to borrow cash so please suggest reasonable priced tents (max around the $1000 mark) :) Thanks

Hi
I would suggest the OzTent. If you have a 4x4 ute, I can not see why it will not fit in the back?
Cheers

The oztents are a little to long, as they are 2m long when pack up. We wanted to try and keep as much room free as possible in the tray.

Hi
That is a pity, as once you have used an OzTent, you will see just how good a tent they really are and why those that have them sing high praise for them. We have had many tents over the years, including a brand new
Southern Cross Touring tent with the optional inside poles that do away with the centre pole. It is a good tent and we only have ever used it 3 times. When I saw the OzTent, I wished that I had looked around before buying the
Southern Cross and I would have save myself $900
It is still like new sitting high and dry in the shed. If I had some unforeseen mishap the the RV4, I still would not go back to the
Southern Cross, but would have no hesitation and getting another OzTent.
Cheers
Stephen

G'day Bush Basher,
we have COI Primus lightning touring tent, it is pretty quick to set up, you can stand up in it no problem and the canvas is pretty heavy duty, and we can throw it in the back of the Prado without a problem.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
John.

Bush Basher, I would suggest a used Freedom or
Southern Cross Family Tourer if you can find one. Alternately a new Oz Tent is the go. Have a look at Stephen's profile above and you will see the Oz Tent in all sorts of
places.
We have a Freedom Family Tourer and a Outback Campers (WA) RTT on a camping trailer. The Freedom is 15 years old and gets used about 3 times a year
:( but it is as good as the day it was purchased. Those that have the Oz Tent swear by them.
Cheers
Mark

Hi,
we have had many different tents over the years... we now have the Oztent RV4 and wish we had found it many years ago. Yes it can seem a little 'long' storage wise, but I think you willl work things out if you go for one of these. They are of excellent quality and build.
regards

We have purchased a Black Wolf lite turbo plus 300. You do have a choice of two weights, either canvas or the lite and we chose the lite as the tent willl only be used for 4wd trips when we are required to park up the caravan. We purchased our tent from Anaconda for a great price, but they are also available on e-bay. We have used this past week and have been most impressed with how quick it is to erect(advertisements say 30 seconds but that must be with practice, but wasn't difficult) and take down. We are a couple in our late 50's and particuarly wanted a tent we could stand up in and had sufficient room without being large. We can certainly recommend.

The only thing we didn't like about the tourer tents is the pole in the middle. Just personal preference :)
I might have a look at the Turbo 300 in canvas instead of Poly. We had a look in BCF but they only seemed to have the Turbo lite (poly) ones, I will have to
check out Anaconda.
Does any one have the Turbo 300 in canvas? Also is their a particular time of year people have found it more likely for tent retailers to have sales on tents?
Once we have decided on the tent we will have to
check out ebay.
Thank you everyone for your responses so far..

Gidday
another vote for Black Wolf. I have a turbo 240 which as name suggests is 2.4m square, with enough height to stand up in. A few minutes to set up, a few more to take down and fold (it gets easier with practice) and the bag is small enough to fit cross wise in a Falcon
sedan's boot which it used to before I got a ute.
Oz tent now have the Oztent jet which is on the same principle as a Black Wolf turbo but with a different fly and awing arrangement.
Cheers

Hi
We just spent 4 weeks in the Kimberly June of this year using a Black Wolf Turbo 240 which worked a treat.Longest stay in any one place was 2 nights so it got put up and down fairly frequently and it was packed inside the back of a Jackaroo on top of our storage unit
We are have been camping for more than 40 years now and so far is the best tent we have used
Cheers

As long as the tent is faster and easier to put up and take down then a dome tent.... urggg they can get quite frustrating when you are moving alot.

For our usage we couldn't justify spending on a Freedom or
Southern Cross and we didn't want to spend that sort of money until we were sure we liked the tourer style tents anyway.
We ended up with an Outdoor Connection Cooper Touring Tent, the thing we liked the most is the lower windows that you can have open for ventilation even in nasty weather. There is ample room in it for a double mattress (or two singles) on one side of the pole which leaves loads of room on the other side (for gear or if we were doing some real quick overnighter and decided to just set this tent up and sleep the kids in there too. We have two kids (6 and 8) and had a camper trailer in the past.
We have only used it for the first time over the Christmas break, not much water got into it when I was "weathering it in" prior to that and none during rain when we had it set up thereafter. It's reasonably heavy because my husband likes to keep the ground mat all the poles and everything else in it's bag! Set up is very quick, quicker than the kids hiking type tent I reckon, depending on how many windows you decide to peg out.
At this stage I'd be happy to recommend it, actually would love to get one like it for the kids as
well but that's probably not feasible at the moment :(
The only thing I was against was the floor, not heavy duty pvc type but more like a tarp (I think similar to the OzTrails in that regard) but in reality we figure we would always have a ground sheet (expensive annexe mat) anyway, otherwise I would have gone for the Oz version or Primus COI (but I saw some bad reviews on primus in regards to quality of workmanship which put me off a bit)

Hi Bush Basher,
We have a Black Wolf 300 - in the heavier canvas. It is very quick and easy to put up and take down, but when packed up, the bag is quite large and heavy. We bought ours from a camping show a few years ago, so got a good deal on the price.

Hi Bushbasher00, Another vote here for the Oz tent, we have had ours for over 6 years and had it in a few storms now and it has stood up
well.
The only down side to it is the size, we put ours on the roof rack. We are more than happy with it.
Cheers

I have a Black Wolf 300 in the heavy canvas - great tent - only used a few times but easy to set up and pack away's pretty good once you get the hang of it. Have since purchased a camper trailer (the
cook decided she needed more of everything!) so the wolfie is up for grabs. If you are interested pls PM me.

Another vote for the Black Wolf Turbo Tent 300 canvas.
Took it away for a month last year and you get reasonably quick at setting it up with practice.
Having said that a friend of
mine has an Oz tent and loves it.
