Hi. Just one simple question. Will a 2kva honda or yamaha run a heron 3 air conditioner in my caravan or do I need a bigger one? Thanks Brian.

I did a quick search of Aircon/Generator threads and 82707 may help.
If not just enter GENERATOR in the search box at top of page and go a bit deeper than I did. Also...others may ask you for more electrical info such as start up AMPS...etc.

After you do the research, ask the dealer to connect it up to the van and try it.

I'm hoping someone has that same air con. And runs it on a generator. Brian.

Brian, while you wait for someone with the exact combo I can tell you I ran a Coleman Mach III with a Honda i20 so you are in with a chance I reckon. Bloke next to me in a van park had an i20 and let me test it then I bought one. I suppose you know it's not actually running them that is the problem it is starting them, once going the genny was far from stressed.

Brian,
I have a Honda 2.0 and a Heron 2.2 (I think - it is not here now) They work fine together - but don't use the eco-throttle, it just stalls.

You might find it'll run the A/c , then you'll want TV, Lights, Laptop, microwave , and it won't run all those others with the A/c going, I found with my 2Kva it revs flat out just to run the A/c and used to much fuel, Get a good Fan.

I eMailed Heron in Adelaide and asked them exactly that question, "Will the Honda 2kva run my 2.2 Heron", the short version of the reply was, "NO".

Talking to people around the traps they say you can so try before you buy.

The Honda generator guys at the camping shows had a display with a Heron 2.2 running off a Honda 2.0 all day every day - that was enough to convince me -:)

for an extra couple of hundred dollars you can buy the 2.4 yamaha...not only will it start your a/c it will also start and run other appliances with the a/c running.
my yamaha 2.4 will run my a/c and microwave plus lights and tv and battery charger all at the same time....

The Honda is rated at continuos power of 1600 with a maximum of 2000. It is quieter & lighter than the 2400 Yammy. I have started the Honda & turned on the A/cond (the Honda NOT on econ throttle) once the Honda handles the a/cond start up it's fine from then on. The Yamaha is bulky to store & has two carry handles & is 32 kg. The yammy is 10kg heavier the the Honda. I chose the Honda because I can carry it & store it easy. As per other forum comments try both & ask questions from the seller fellas. Honda has a two year warranty with the dealer supplying two more years at no extra cost so total warranty is 4 yrs. I think from memory the Yammy only has 12 mths warranty.

My 2kva honda will start and tun my ac until the ambient temp gets + 36°, then it cuts out on overload. I have the fridge on gas and nothing else running, also keep the genny in a shaded spot.

I tried a Honda 2kva on my air conditioner.
Worked OK on cooler days – on a 40 deg day it kept cutting out.
If you see previous threads, others have experienced similar problems

Our Hondaeu20i ran our herron 2.2 on eco fine (on the herron box under the seat it states 900watts), with a/c cycling we get 8hours run time and when the a/c flat out almost get 5 hours.

We have never had problems with the genny cutting out, we regularly use it in 40deg and the hottest being 46deg in the shade. The main thing is to have the genny in the shade, elevated slightly and if you can, place it where there is a slight breeze blowing into the power point end.

Airconditioners come in different sizes, I measured my airconditioner at about 1500 watts and the 2 KVA won't run it long on very hot day.

Hi Brian
Have only just seen your question and dont think anyone has directly answered it.
I have the Heron3 and it runs easily from my Honda 2.0 genny - however it struggles momentarily on starting and it is important to not have any other draw on the power running at startup - this even includes the built in battery charger if fitted to your van.
Once running, you can also use several other low draw appliances, such as multiple battery chargers.

Cheers Dalb

Thanks for that Dalb. At the moment I am thinking about a yamaha 2.4 . But it will have to wait a little longer. Brian.
