Hi all,

Any one have one of these -
http://www.slrcaravans.com.au/ADVENTURER%204x4%20HOME.html
VERY intrigued, they look the goods, and they're probably extremely expensive, but I think they would be ideal except for narrow/tight tracks.
Any thoughts on them?
stumbly

Hi Stumbly
I have one on order, due in a couple of months.
Previously had a TVan and then Bushtracker and decided that towing isn't really for me - after 60,000k! I think the biggest restriction on the SLR will be height - I think / hope it will get though most other places we want to go - Cape, Fraser, deserts etc.
Super single wheels I think are essential (more ramp over, better overall especially in sand etc)- but add about $7k to the base $170k. Yes it s a lot - but think about the cost of something like a new Bushtracker and a tug for that and that helps keep it in perspective.
Looked at 4WD motorhomes like Earthcruiser and All Terrain before deciding on the SLR. It is a custom design based upon our previous experiences - including what we want and not stuff that we wouldn't use.
Not sure how many SLR have built but at present they seem to be shipping a couple a month, as well as their vans and HiLux based motorhomes.

g'day Ian,
Thanks for the info mate. I'm with you - I've had enough of towing.
I wasn't sure of the price of these but it is actually much less than I imagined. I was expecting 250k plus fully optioned - in line with the winnebago pricing.
They are starting to look even more attractive now!
I like their "kinetic mount" system aswell - did all terrain or earth cruiser have similar?
hope you do a forum blog for your shake down trip and a pics aswell.

Cheers, stumbly

Stumbly,

It isn't hard to get over 200k though with suspension upgrade, Stratos seats, winch, etc etc.

Gooday Stumbly,
it's exactly the sort of machine I have been dreaming about... unfortunately, it will probably remain just that... a dream.... "bummer"
Oh well, at least I have pictures I can look at now.

G'day Fred, I know the feeling. Except for winning lotto its a bit out of my price range - unless I can convince the wife to sell everything!, or I work for another 20 years

I also dream about one of these.
To convince myself that I need one I am using the following:-
Selling your house and you will save money in the long run ie
Save rates and water
Electricity
House Insurance
Maintenance
If you do not like the neighbours just move - Would cost many thousands if you had to do this with a house.
Food cost would be the same if you were travelling or stayed at home.
Register the vehicle in whichever state is the cheapest.

Any more??

Honky

No spare room for the in-laws to visit
You can just move if you see/hear them coming
Move if you don't like the view....
Move to another climate any time you want

G'day Honky,
When we are travelling around we always end up chatting to the oldies who have done that and they ALL say "we should have started 20 years earlier - but waited for retirement/super etc." or words to that effect.
So there's another reason to do it - a couple of thousand nomads can't be wrong!
Plenty of work around the place to top up every now & then if your not fussy about what you do.
I just have another 5 years until the chitlens are off my hands (apparently!) and thats my plan.
Just do it mate!

Cheers, stumbly

ah, Fred - we must have been typing at the same time. A fine reason you posted - escape the inlaws!
