I am interested in buying an awning I can attach to the left side of my Toyota Landcruiser. I think I would like a spring loaded return unit but am open to suggestions from those that have products they are happy with.
Look forward to advice on what brand & model to buy and where available?
Thanks, Ken

Alot of the spring loaded, self returning ones end up being manually wind up ones.. Don't expect the cheaper ones to stay retractable. Not saying don't get one, just don't expect too much.

Hi Ken
Years ago we had a canvas awning made up that slid into a rope rail on the side of the pack rack. Took quite some time to slide on and set up, but it was good. Seeing that we do not take a pack rack any more, it was back to the drawing board. We happened to be at the Adelaide 4X4 Show and immediately saw what we were after, a Black Widow awning that would attach to the cross bars on the rook. It has its own protective cover and is as simple as unzipping the cover, undo 3 straps and unroll. You then put the 2 side poles in place and it is all set up. When it is time to roll it up, it is just reverse the set up. If I said it takes two minutes, I would be wrong as it usually takes less than a minute.

Here are a few pictures of our old original unit ant the Black Widow.

Cheers

Stephen

IMHO, side shades are overpriced and it is easy to make one of your own that will be considerable stronger, cheaper and better designed to give a more versatile shelter. Quite a few people have now copied my design. Happy to provide details if you want to explore making your own.

Mark. Unfortunately, the photos I have aren't the best. I keep the awning attached to my roofrack and that is currently off the vehicle and up in the roof of my garage. Next time I am using the roofrack I will set the whole thing up and get clearer pictures. Meanwhile, I have a couple of sketches and a description of what I did that I am happy to send to anyone who wants them The main pont is to make a design that gives more shade for much the same canvas area. it does this by having a flap like the side of an a frame tent and poles that can be used at different heights. It can also be used like an a frame tent.

Mark,
This is basically a25mm sq tube with a telescopic 20 mm sq tube as an extention u bolted onto the roof rack .I have made it so as I can cover over the front door or to go past the rear door.Very easy to make & pretty simple to put up If you (or others ) want details happy to oblige.
Mike.

Hi Ken

I went for a Fiamma wind out job that are used on caravans and campers. After fiddling with roll out models an trying single handedly to set them and more importantly pack them away - I looked around for something else.

Go to
http://www.camec.com.au/images/brochures%20pdf/FIAMMA%20AWNINGS%202P.pdf

Are they strong - yes. I saw two of them on the CSR in 2009 and no probs were experienced. I have used mine only a few times and am delighted. Sadly l haven't any photos.

Would l ever buy another should I need to do so - in a heart beat.

The only down side is they aren't cheap.

Phil

I've got the ARB awning fitted to 2 heavy duty Rhino cross bars - not an auto retract but rolling it up takes about 30 seconds. Advantages - quite cheap, sturdy enough for how and where I use it and quite easy to erect and pack up. Easier with two people but one is OK provided it isn't too breezy. Have permanently attached a couple of sprung guys and ALWAYS peg it down!!
Downside - it probably won't last as long as the expensive ones, but then I can always buy another one and still be ahead!

Cheers

We are very happy with our foxwing and have had no problems with it. We have it on the L side of our trailer and it opens around to cover the front where we have the fridge box as well as the side for our kitchen. We are getting an add on panel that can be moved around to provide even more shade.
