Hello

I am looking at getting my first 4WD, and seem pretty set on the Patrol.

I have been browsing carsales and ebay, and found out a bit about them.

I am considering the TI around the 2001 mark - Redbook says they go for private sales around $17-20k for 150-250k kms. My budget would be under $20k.

Ideally, I wanted a manual diesel, but it looks like (from my few days research) that the TI that year doesn't come in diesel or manual. Am I right? I can probably get used to the auto, but I don't want to use all the unleaded that the TI is reported to use (20L/100km city driving I read).

The main reason I wanted a TI was for the creature comforts - leather seats, dual zone air con, etc. How close does the ST plus come to delivering the goods?

Thanks, Alex.

See if you can find any ST-L models. There's not too many around, but they slotted in between the ST and Ti. I've got one, and it's got the leather seats, rear aircon, electric front seats, and a couple of other nice bits from the Ti.

I'll post back and let you guys know what I settle on.

Thats right Alex , only petrol in Ti that year.

Prices change a bit because the pertols went from the old 4500 to the ripper 4800 in that year.

I have a manual 4800 from 2002 and an auto 4800 from 2010 , the auto Ti's do use around 19 around town and manuals 17.

Its funny how we all think differently - I'm busy trying to rip out the dual zone air and other junk from my new patrol and wouldn't touch leather for bush work.

One thing to think about - We had a new 2001 4.2 diesel Gu for a month and it was massively worse in NVH and performance than the 2002 manual petrol and price difference means the petrol is usually cheaper to own.

Interesting thoughts. I've just swapped the standard cloth seats in my GQ for Leather Ti seats and they are easier to maintain and the Ti seat had much better seating position and comfort level.

Probably personnal preference Ruffy - I love the standard Patrol seats - but on the Ti pathfinder acquired over Xmas the leather seats got so sticky that seat covers are needed.

Mind you I did put seat covers on the Patrol after I realized that dust dissapears down into the material with a quick light rub which makes them look good.
Going to be a pain to clean them later though I suppose.

Yes I use to think leather was the holy grail, BUT having a job where I am in and out of cars all day I would now not have leather if you gave it to me. WAY TO HOT. Black leather especially. Any car with leather is much hoter to get into then cloth. I have also noticed the leather steering wheels get so hot they are hard to hang on to.

Hi Alex,

I can't offer anything on Patrols as they don't suit my requirements, however am interested as to your main reasons for wanting a 4WD.

Leather seats, air con?? - shouldn't you be more concerned about drivability, clearance, power etc....comfort is so far down my list of priorites, nice to have I'm sure, however it was certainly not a priority when I selected my 4wd!!!

Regards
Alan

We had an STL and the leather seats were hot and slippery.

Am much happier with the cloth seats with canvas covers in the Cruiser.

What sort of stuff do you hope to do in it? I mean if leather seats and climate control are your only prerequisites, you can get the great 4 Wheel drive of China, The Great Wall x240 for only $23,990 Brand new.

Cheers Tanka.
