Hi I am travelling from
Birdsville to Ayers Rock on about the 4th June and I am considering whether to go either the French Line or via
Marree.
I would welcome any information re estimated time and general "Sight seeing " comparisons of the two alternative
routes. No trailer and vehicle is
well equipped with winch, sat phone and sat navigation etc.

Hi Old fellow,
Both
routes are very different, but all thinks being equal and if you have never had a ride on the classic
Birdsville Track Cooper Creek Ferry, then do the
Birdsville and
Oodnadatta Tracks via
Marree.
As good as the Simpson is, there is a lot of history on these two iconic tracks and the ferry ride is worth it alone. There is a very lot to see and will probably take you longer than the Simpson Crossing.
From
Birdsville, spend a few days there and you can take a days drive out into the Simpson, doing Big Red and have a look around Eyre
Creek and this will give you a taste of the Simpson Crossing.
As for the two classic Tracks, there is a very lot to see if you make the time to stop and get out and inspect the many features along the way, you will be surprised at just how much there is to see out there and it is far from being just another dirt road to drive and if you still want a swim at Dalhousie, it is no big deal to make the small detour north of
Oodnadatta.
As they say, the Simpson will always be there but the
Cooper Creek ferry crossing will not. (by all accounts it should have only run last season, but with all this
water coming down, it should be running for a long time yet.
Just my thoughts.
Either way, have a great trip and good to see you are starting to plan your trip in advance.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Old fellow,
I would agree with Stephen's suggestion. I note that you are from Queensland so perhaps you could cross the Simpson on your return leg unless of course you have plans for another route.
Like Stephen, I wish you a great trip.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. It looks like it will be
Birdsville,
Marree,
Oodnadatta,
Hamilton, Dalhouse, Mt Dare, Finke,
Kulgera and then via the Mulga
Park road to Ayres Rock with a lot of interesting stops on the way.
Many thanks
