I am currently looking at the options to upgrade to an off road type caravan. Looking at the specs on a decent off road caravan the tare weight ranges 3000kg plus. I am currently towing 2000 to 2300Kg. My question is with the additional 1000kg added to the load what effect will this have on fuel economy? My tow vehicle is a 100 series V8 petrol landcruiser.

It depends so much on:-
- terrain (hills and curves, braking & accelerating)
- speed
- wind
- your driving style (etc)
that only you can answer your question.

Buy a scangauge and try it out: you'll soon modify your speed/driving style to reduce fuel costs!
Last week I towed my 1-tonne boat 300kms into a strong head wind and used 1.6 times my usual (vehicle-only) fuel consumption; on the return trip I had a similar tail wind and used just my normal (vehicle only) amount! (No it wasn't downhill all the way)

Hi Dr Hook Just looked at the Scanguage looks like a good device to have. The hills and head winds are always a bugger, in the odd occasion you get a real good tail wind. I had a great tail wind from Camooweal to the three ways at Tennant Creek. The only issue was it was a head wind on the return trip. DOH

Its the loaded weight you should publish.

Not many people go on holiday in an empty van.

You are restricted to 3500kg ATM whatever the Tare is.

I got an average of 5.7KPL towing a 2850 kg van around the big block.

Worst day was just under 4 best day was 7.

Vehicle 100ser TD.

Have been told 3KPL is about what to expect with a really heavy van on the back from a petrol.

hi gadget, this is sort of relevant to your queiry. my tug is a 100 series 06 t/d. my old van was 2100 loaded at about 16.5 to the 100 at 85 kph. new van is 3400 loaded and has taken me out to about 19.5 per hundred so you can see what the extra weight will do, still at about 85 kph. mind you its got its lunch cut towing the heavy sucker. hope this helps. cheers mm

I met a bloke at Lower Levels in Katherine with a new 200 V8 pulling a 23foot Sterling.
He said he was getting 25-30L per 100Km.
What is with this Kms per litre . That is like saying 100metres per pint or something. The offical and accepted measure is L per 100Kms.

And I am old enough to know MPG.

I can't help you with your fuel consumption query Gadget, but I can say - get the van you want. Even if you don't travel quite so far each day on the fuel money, it will be in the best places that you want to see.

Hi Motherhen Yes it would be fantastic to buy the Kedron, Bushtracker or Spinifex? And have the time to travel with the grey nomads seeing this wonderful country side in comfort. I still have 15 to 20 years before I qualify to join the Grey nomad club. At present I have a Jayco 18 foot Expanda in our travels we will base the caravan and go out and do 4X4 driving. When we have arrived at some of these ideal spots we have said to ourselves wouldn’t it be great if we could have brought the van here? The other issue we have is the time to travel as we have 2 children school age so we are restricted to school holidays and my annual and long service leave.

So ideally we are looking for a van that is light weight will go anywhere, quick to setup, has most of the comforts of a full caravan at a good price?

Hi Gadget

"So ideally we are looking for a van that is light weight will go anywhere, quick to setup, has most of the comforts of a full caravan at a good price? "

Yes, you and everyone else. In the interim, with your needs for a family and for holidays where you would be looking for venues in fine weather, have you considered an off-road camper trailer. Family ones fold out with lots of space, and the children can learn their share of setting up and packing up camp. Teach them well, send them out to work in good careers, so they can finance your travels with a good caravan in your retirement years :) (Everyone's fairy tale dream too.)
