Hi all,
We have just sold our eight year old Coromal Capri and purchased a Crusader Cross Country single axel full van.
We are thinking of adding an inverter to run a laptop and also the modem. we would appreciate any info on what size and brand to get and if we can install ourselves,
We have one 130w solar panel and 2 x 110amp batteries.(hope the one panel is enough)it wont be running the fridge in the van we will run that on gas.
look forward to your comments best info on the net!

Hi Sue and Joe
Yes easily done, our new 600W Pure sine wave will do that
well, It also has a USB charge port.
This is ours but you can buy Pure Sine Wave
inverters anywhere, Jaycar, eBay etc.
Regards
Derek from ABR

Derek why would you need to go to the extra expense of a pure sine wave inverter just to run a laptop that is obviously charged through a transformer?
Cheers Craig..........

I think the modem if a 240V type would suffer from interference from a modified sine wave inverter.

Yep I agree re the modem, I also reckon that the sq wave could upset the wireless connection too

A 12V DC power supply for about $20 will run your laptop more efficiently than an inverter.

Sure but what about the modem and perhaps camera and video and cell phones etc.

Most laptops run on 19 volt and need a 12volt Converter that steps it up to 19
volts A 6amp one that will run a decent size lappy can cost up to $80.
Jaycar part No MP 3472 $74.95 Projecta part no DC 6000 $69 at Battery World
A modem can be made to run off the 12 v in the van and if you get a dual cig lighter socket with USB $19 at Repco you can do all of those off the 12v using your car chargers for the phones..

I Think Dereks advice is good and
well meant...........
It is sensible to have an inverter and use this to "grow" into future accessories / devices than to purchase something that is limited and specific in its appliactions.....A good sine wave inverter is a good investment without the risk............yes, many small appliances running on dc are suitable for 12v lighter plugs etc...and they come supplied with these
But for example many digital cameras come with dedicated batteries that require a 240 volt charger

Very few batteries use 240 volt as a charge input and all the ones I have for 3 different phones and two cameras and 3 laptops all step it down to mostly LESS than 12 volt.
EG Iphone charger has a cord that goes in back of 240 stepdown and also in computer USB. 5v
Nikon camera has a 240 step down with a socket for 12 v Both cut down to 8.4v.
Laptops 19v
Nokias use 5v as do the Bluetooth headsets and Tom tom navigator
My Maxon BP3 modem can be run on 12 volts quite happily
They only supply a 240 volt charger so they can sell you the additional ones I reckon
Dereks idea is fine but if you have car chargers as we did you dont need an inverter

Our Olympus cameras LIoN battery only has a 240v charger, the 240 lead is permanently connected to it, it only takes 4.2v to charge the battery but no 12v charger available.

Thanks Graham but they still only have 240v chargers, no 12v ones.
Believe me I've looked as it is the only thing I can't charge on 12v.

Peter,
The first link of Grahams contains a 12V + 240v charger (the first one, Halnel Lithium ION charger for Olympus batteries), one similiar to
mine purchased recently for my Nikon D90. They have adapters available that clip on to charge a wide range of LI-ION batteries.

I would get one, you then dont need to get different chargers for all different 12v uses, just use your mains chargers via the inverter. I have a 300w pure sine wave in the car attached to a 4plug powerboard which is almost all used up each night when I am away remotely
