Can you have a lower first gear put in the Hilux gear box? My daughter does a lot of towing with a horse float and finds first gear too high, especially for take off on uphill slopes.

Gday...

Struth !
I've had a few HiLuxs in my time both petol and diesel. The one thing I would never have thought they needed was a lower 1st gear - either for high or low range work.

The solution may be puttin' the GGs on a diet ... or getting a more powerful tug that takes the weight of the horse float.
Cheers
John

I reckon it's the newer model but the Hilux isn't the only new ute with a tall first gear - I've heard of burnt out clutches on the builders Navara's too, not low enough for building sites.

G'day Twinkles

I obviously don't know what model Hilux your daughter owns, but I have a 1992 model, 2.4 ltr petrol, and it will go up any hill. Mind you, I think the owners manual says it is only good for towing 1300kg or something, but I only towed a 750 GVM camper with it.

I believe you can get 'rock crawler' type gearing for them in the tranfer case, but this would probably render it useles for day-to-day driving. Being an 'old fitter' who specialised in gearbox repair, I would suggest it would be nigh impossible to just put a lower first gear in it.... too many problems with dimensions and centre differences with mating gears, your new first gear would have more teeth on it making it impossible to mate with the other gear teeth. I am happy to be corrected on this.

Maybe there is a replacement g'box, dunno

Best of luck, Cheers, Dave

Surprising that first gear can't handle it. Does she know how to do a handbrake start?

Why not low range?

If your daughters hilux has free wheeling hubs tell her to just put in in low range 1st(hubs unlocked) till the top of the hill then select high range again. I know the man says not to do it but I have done it for years reversing my boat up the drive way. My mate was a mechanic and I noticed him doing the same thing. The only thing to watch is if you gave it to much gas you may snap an axle.
Cheers Pete

Gday Twinkles
It might be easier to change the diff ratios .

Gday Twinkles
Changing the diff ratio wont effect the top end as you are only allowed to do 100 km ph or there abouts anyway.

G'day Twink

I've got an 06 diesel Hilux with big rims and tyres, and I agree, it's a bit of a struggle pulling the boat out without using low range. Even using first gear low range when rock crawling, I would like it a bit lower. Totally different story with the earlier models though.

Her Hilux is an 06. She had the previous model for 4 years. It was better taking off on slope, but not as good at towing.

i would maybe look at a replacement car with an auto in it, changing gears/diffs will not be cheap ......
I dont know if you can do it on yours but on my model cruiser you can cut a slot in the plate for the low range and it gives you an option of having a low range 2wd option, excellent for reversing, hill starts and tight spots, you then have full 5 gears of "low range" and when you are in a better spot, stop, shift to high range and away you go, adds years to the clutch ..
Cheers

come to think of it you could fit smaller diameter tyres, simple way to do it and cheapest if you can sell the other tyres ...
Go see a tyre dealer and ask what they can offer...
