I have a 93 jayswift standard (not off-road) jayco camper. I have flipped the axel which had 100ml elbows on each end with a stub axel attached. That gave me enough height gain to tow it behind my Xtrail. My question is rim and tyre size the van still has the standard 13 inch steel rims with 175/70 R13 tyres. Would bigger rims tyres improve stabilty when towing. The van now sits higher and the original wheels look a bit small .

hi trevor v
thats a crank axle my 1969 viscount caravan had one its makes for better/safer towing weight distribution lifting the camper
it probably has Holden rims being 13 inch
i will ask my brother in-law what size his jayco eagle has its a bit early yet to ring him i think they may be the same
stud patterns would have to match in fact someone on here may already know the answer
when i fliped the viscount axle i stayed with same size rims and tyres on a 16ft van it was a full height van and didn't have any stability problems just looked a bit strange because of the wheel to w/arch spacings
its your choice but i wouldn't worry too much you get use to the look
in fact if you google it will probably come up
cheers

Cheers Mazcan, Yes they are torana rims standard issue for this model jayco. I did the conversion two years ago so i have driven a few k's with the setup. I was just woundering if madebe a wider rim/ tyre would get ride the raod behaviour. It doesn't sway but it is not far from it. i reckon if i had to swerve in a hurry I would get a rude awakening. I know more weight up front might help, but the front of the van (door area) and forward has a lot of stuff thrown in there already, even the spare tyre goes in there loose at the door openning.
cheers Trevor.

hi trevor v
what are you towing the camper with
maybe the suspension is too soft at the rear end
when i was having trouble with my mazda bravo being controlled by the 16 viscount i fitted a set of tough dog foam cell shockies all round that cured any sway even with-out a wdh
or have you considered a weight distribution hitch it would make a huge difference more so than putting on wider wheels and tyres but the shocks will probably enough

hi
trevor again just realized you have an xtrail my neighour had an earlier model and was trying to tow a 16f full height jayco and it was very unstable
so told her to get some wdh bars and i set it up for her
she came back from the next trip after that smiling and said it was very easy to drive the xtrail she had /had a very soft suspension and i think maybe yours is the same
cheers

Yes Mazcan you might be on the money there. I have a treg hitch on the front so i assume sway bars cannot be fitted to that sort of hitch.

hi trevor
i googled treg hitches last night and found a lot of imfo and some refers to threads dating back to discussions on e/o and it says wdbars can be used with treg but it's advisable to upgrade the nylon treg block to the large typethis site will give you leads to the references
www.lets-getaway.com but i didnt quiet pick up on who/which company actually spplies the treg compatible wdh
cheers
