Do you have the Toyota bar or a Hayman Reece or simmilar?

The Toyota cast steel bars are known to fail when using a WDH. Toyota apparently only allow the use of their original tongue.

It would be best to fit an Hayman Reece towbar at the same time.

Last year a friend had the original Prado towbar which is a casting, snap off and the van separate from the car.

Luckily no damage except to the bar.

However it was interesting to note that the part the chains were attached to went with it which is not pleasant thought.

This incident was posted on here complete with photos.

What weight is you van as HR have different weight WDH bars for different weight vans

EG a 550 for up to 2500kg and a 750 for above that.

You will definitely notice the difference using one when towing.

The Toyota fitted Tow Bar is 2500kg Braked and 750kg unbraked.

The Van's ATM: 1,680kg.

GTM: 1,513 kg

Tare Mass: 1,338 kg

Axle Capacity 3,800 kg

Now exactly which one answers the question, I dont know.

Well if you look here which is the official HR site you will see the different models.

Yours would require the 550lb as its always wiser to err on the side of heaviness of the ball weight.
As you have mentioned you got aquaplaning probably due to the ball weight.

ball weight guide

As I said a genuine HR towbar is also advisable

.
After seeing my friends Toyota one I wouldnt hesitate to buy one.

His van was only about the same size and weight as yours.

Heavy duty Towbar

The heavy duty is the one to get.

Check with the member who has the WDH for sale what his is.

Easy to tell the arms have the figure stamped in them or the size is 1" is 550 1 1/8 is 750.

Dont want to be a party pooper but you would really be better off with a 550lb proper hitch as your ball weight is right at the upper end of level rider bars.

Certainly they cost more but are much better for what they do.

They are much more adjustable for differing weights for one thing and do a far better job.

Basically you get what you pay for and after having one for several years would not consider towing without one.

Cheers
