I recently purchased from Exploroz shop the specially discounted TrackRanger software package ($99) together with the Natmap 100k DVD's ($45). What a great combination which I am just getting started with but my initial impression is that this really is user friendly GPS software for outback travellers. In exploring the program I initially had some difficulty in plotting the outback treks downloadable from Exploroz but with the help of the TrackRanger team who modified the software to enable the easy incorporation of these plots into TrackRanger. Product support for this software from my experience so far has been promp, friendly and in a word excellent. Given that I these are my initial experiences with TrackRanger, and an affordable price tag, I can certainly recommend it.

Yes ditto that Ross. I’ve been using it for a few years now and have found it very easy to use and excellent for my off track adventures. The support from the Trackranger crew is 2nd to nione. Just wait till you start making maps from Google Earth sat images. It’s addictive LOL. Just wish I had more time to spend learning all it can do.

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick.

I asked this Q sometime ago but didn't get much response from anyone. The Q was: what's the benefit of Trackranger over Ozi? I have only ever used Ozi and I'm happy with it but if TR has extra functionality I'd be pleased to know about it.

Any info?

Cheers.

Hi John, quite a few threads in the past on this point. Ozi has a lot more functionality IMHO but with that comes an additional degree of difficulty in learning all that it can do. For a novis, Trackranger provides a similar tool that is user friendly from the start. I have both programs running through a Franson GPS gate but have found Trackranger the easiest to use.

Cheers Mick

Mick

I would be interested to know what specific functions do/did you have difficulty in learning on OziExplorer compared to Trackranger? Great if you will/could elaborate. Trackranger is a bit of a mystery to most people who are into GPS mapping as they dont provided a free demo version like OziExplore and there is no open forum that I know of (I assume due to a limited number users). Drop in price is a good move.

Cheers

G'day there Greg. Trust all is well with you.

I must qualify my statements by admitting that I am very much a part time user of the Nav programs. They get dusted off before a big trip usually the week before I leave to make sure they are working as they should. These are my opinions only and relate to using (or trying to) from a fresh start or first time user (getting started) type situation. For me, Trackranger was a lot easier to get using than Ozi. I have struggled with Ozi from day one where as I had the basics of Trackranger sorted within a couple of hours. There is a lot more to “learn” with Ozi even to get the basics working (and have you ever noticed that manuals for computer programs are never that user friendly anyway).

I am sure that with instruction, I would soon get on top of Ozi as well however, needing instruction in how to get it working in the first place means there’s a degree of complexity involved. Ozi is by far the more widely used program and I hope to become more proficient in its use as time allows (May have to wait till retirement though). The limited number of T/R users is a disadvantage as you say but again, I believe that mastering the basics of T/R is comparatively easier than Ozi.

I know that you have a lot of experience with Ozi and many other nav programs so I’d be interested in your opinions of Trackranger from an "ease of use" perspective for a “new user” (navigation program novice) perspective compared to Ozi .

Hang on - that's what I asked you :). Bit dififcult for me to provide comment on Ozi as I have been using for so long - cant recall how "hard" it was to learn basics.

If Trackranger is still $99 it may be time to try out.

Cheers
Greg.

Give it a crack Greg, I'd be interested in your thoughts. I'd like to be able to spend a lot more time on both systems. I think I need more holidays LOL.
