At he did the right thing. He had an epirb which he used appropriately and made himself noticable. Walking alone not so bright.

bit harsh

the larapinda trail is a well rocognised promoted tourist walk

in an ideal wolud youd take some mates but in the end you make do

things ended up going against him but he was prepared for that

Glad he got out but what was he thinking temps. have been 49 - 52 for the last week and a half here reckon it would have been just as hot there. Like the bright pance idea though

Just shows the tough choice Journalists make every day in writing headlines -

A. FACT - bushwalkers life saved due to carrying an Emergency Beacon

B. SENSATIONALISM - bushwalker saved when helicopter pilot saw bright clothing ( ignoring the fact that he only saw it because he had started to search and flown to exactly that location guided by the Emergency Beacon)

Doug,

I had a similar thought a few years ago, not a bright pair of pants but a bright coloured sleeping bag.

A bright red sleeping bag unzipped and laid out flat would, I hope, attract attention from the air.

I have not had to put the idea to the test but I still have a bright coloured sleeping bag when ever I go camping.

Good idea to carry several Vee Sheets as required by law in safety equipment for small boats venturing off shore.

Very cheap, very compct when folded, and instantly recognisable to search authorities as distress sign.

Something we all carry in our 4 x 4's, the windscreen shade. The silver side (not the meat you have with white sauce) provides a great reflective surface and can be pointed at an aircraft.

I have an orange Vee sheet on my boat but would never even consider using it on the red sand in the desert. Ditto with the red sleeping bag idea mentioned above.
What is useful is something that provides a big contrast to the surroundings, not a particular coloured item that may be useful at very limited locations.

When looking for a new plastic tarp, I chose a yellow one just for this reason.

Turn to page 3. The crocs are on strike because the local snake population has been trespassing on their land and the french backpackers refuse to use soap. They say that they will be unavailable for comment until further notice and that would be when the backpackers start washing and the scary snakes are gone.

Crocs must have gone soft then as standing in a supermarket queue in places like Katherine or Fitzroy Crossing it can be pretty hard to breathe when too close to certain local residents.
