I am looking for a quiet camp site, 2-3 hours out of Newcastle where we can take our two young grandchildren. My perfect site would be safe swimming for the young ones, shade and quiet location.

Any suggestions gladly received.

Chris,

Not real quiet if you are there in the school holidays but Halifax Point at Nelson Bay is nice. As is Myall Lakes.

Check out seal rocks, great camping and if the beach is not your thing or too rough for the kids there is calm water on the way to the camp site suitable for small children.

The campsite I have stayed at (but it was 7 years ago) is: Treachery Camp Site

Have been going to Seal Rocks for 10 years or more with my 2 children. Love the place.Treachery Beach is a great place but is not a place for swimming. Excellent surf beach but can be rough but well worth a visit
Camp at the main camping ground at Seal Rocks The beach is directly across the road and is very very safe or you can walk/drive to boat beach which is safer again

My Neighbour always goes to Sand bar NSW coast, just past Myall lakes, Smith's beach.

Looks good to me.

Hi Chris, The Riverside Camping Area, Mungo Brush Rd. Hawkes Nest ( 4 K's North of the golf club) might be worth a look at for you. Caretaker is Kevin & his contact # 0419 271 811. The current charge is $15 per night & covers two people & I'm not sure if they charge for extra.

It is privately owned, no powered sights, well grassed, plenty of room to park where you like, plenty of shade, safe swimming for kiddies, good clean & smell free pit toilets, it has a dump point ( and it IS smelly!!) You are not able to connect to water but fresh potable water available on the site should you need to top up. They allow camp fires when fire restrictions not in force. A large dumster bin is on site for waste removal.

The above views based on our visit in 2009, but Hawkes Nest Tourist Info centre, Ph 49970111, told me yesterday that they still rate it a top spot.

My Wife & I are heading there this coming Saturday & expect to be back in Cardiff about Tuesday next week, so feel free to MM me if you want an update as to current conditions. Cheers

G'day Chris

We have just returned from 5 days at Myall River Camp (first time) and we are looking at taking our own grandkids there next time. A really nice sandy beach along the tidal river, plenty of shade trees, mown grass, clean toilets, fresh water supplies and fire places. TYOT (take your own timber (or purchase there ($14.oo)) and BBQ plate for bush cooking. I think the fee is $10 out of holiday time. Its very peaceful and no yahoos. No showers.

Peaceful and safe for kids.

Turn north at the golf course at Hawkes Nest along Mungo Brush Rd its about 3.5K from the town and surfing beach. Don't be put off by the gate sign which says "Primitive Bush Camping".
I sometimes question my sanity . . . . and then it answers back.
