Does anybody know of a good online site discussing insurance for 4WD's plus accessories? Maybe this one, but after a quick browse I haven't found anything.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Ring a broker like CGU or similar.

I have mine insured for agreed value with APIA but then you have to be ancient to go there

Mine has $6000 of accessories , all covered.

Isn't CGU the Insurance Company, not the Broker.

Give GIO a try. We just got our 100 series with $15K of accessories insured for an agreed of $71K for just over $840. It is also fully covered even on a paddock in the middle of the Simpson. I think it also helps to be a 4WD club member.

Give TCIS a go. They insure your 4WD with fully recovery from anywhere.

Tried RAA for a 92 Nissan (valued at $9000) with $10000 of accessories they wanted about $600 and I was to pay $500 excess plus $500 accessories excess their words "$1000 excess". Who's taking the risk me or them. I tried to explain to them that in the normal event of a vehicle accident the HF radio fridge etc would probably not be damaged a fire or theft would be different, but to no avail. I'm still looking.

I am trying to get an acceptable level of insurance for my 95 Defender 130 but so far all insurers rely on Red Book valuations for a standard cab chassis and make no allowance for a custom steel canopy built for the Salvos as an original mod.
They assess the vehicle value at about $10k which is on the low side but I could live with that if they would add the canopy and other accessories like bull bar and snorkel and winch and water tank etc at a realistic value but they max out at 50% of the value of the vehicle.
TCIS seems to have pretty good focus on recovery costs and off road travel etc but still well short of the mark.
Looks like if you want to go off road and equip your vehicle appropriately you have to wear some of the risk yourself.

thanks folks - some good steers in there. I'm with GIO at the mo, but obliged to underinsure. Will try TCIS and APIA (yes I'm old enough) and see how I go.

Hi Desertsoul......

I was also in the same boat about four years ago when I rebuilt ‘The Landy’ inclusive of an Aluminium Canopy and associated accessories.

I dealt with the issue by seeking specialised insurance via TCIS Brokers. The mainstream insurers will find it very difficult to insure this type of vehicle for the values required.

I have detailed records of all the work done on the vehicle, additions such as the canopy, and all the accessories added. I then obtained a valuation from Pickles confirming what would be a ‘reasonable’ replacement cost for the vehicle post restoration. I say reasonable, as it still owed my more than the valuation I asked for which has since reduced on an annual basis. But I accepted that I would need to underwrite some of the value. Annual insurance premiums are fairly high.

The company’s only requirement was that I fit an immobiliser and restrict drivers to people noted on the policy.

I have just commenced restoration of my Defender 110 TDi200, and I haven’t decided how I will address insurance on this when completed, but will most likely take the same course. Although, it will not be accessorised to the extent the Defender 130 TDi200 is.

Noting your comment on TCIS, bear in mind they are a broker only and arrange insurance via an underwriter/insurer. You can personal message me and I will give you my details if you want them to take a look at using the same insurer I have.

Cheers, The Landy
