Hi guys,
We are in
Mount Isa at the moment and after riding out the remidents of the cyclone we have found that the fantastic hatch leaks fom around the edges of the internal shroud in the Kedron. Not a big leak just a drop every 30 sec or so but enough to drip directly on our bed! The bed is at the front of the van and the fantastic hatch is on the slope of the roof.
We also discovered that the speaker on the other end of the van was full of water as
well, wet under the foam insulation after removing it.
Has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it? Might have something to do with the sealant on he roof? There is no caravan repairers here in the Isa and we are going to Alice in a few weeks. Might wait till then, any reccomendations as to who to see in the Alice?
This is not making us happy as now we are worried about the roof rotting. So much money and I believe it at least should be water proof!
Any ideas? Thanks for any replies.

My Roadstar did that in a storm 2 years ago in
Coffs Harbour.
Came
home to find water dripping out of speaker near Aircon.
Got a towel up in there and dried it out and it never ever leaked again despite some heavy rain.
Only thing we could put it down to was water being blown over the edge of the aircon base and getting in somehow..

Yeah Mate I know what you mean.
We dried it all up a couple of nights ago, it rained last night without the wind and it was dry around the fantastic hatch this morning.
I would love to know how it gets in.

Have also found rain coming in the 4 Seasons hatch if hasnt closed properly or one of the shutters has been slightly bent.
The rain hits the roof and bounces back up through
the gap.
Have also had it with the clear plastic hatch with it coming in the ventilation holes even when its closed as there is a small gap between the bottom lip and the top coming down over it.

We had a leaking episode once with our fantastic (current model) - seems the swing up hatch does not seal against strong wind blown rain - our rain got in and onto the bed while we were mobile in a very heavy downpour - we eventually stopped because we couldn't see through the rain - will stop sooner in future. I took the internal shroud off and inspected the installation but it all seemed fine - I just deduced that the design doesn't allow for large volumes of water being driven by gale force wind. Have not noted any issues with our speakers (inside or out).
One of the caravan parks in the Alice has a van repair enterprise on the same site (don't know which one came first) - the spare parts and equipment
shop has a vast range of vanning goods. See
Alice Van Repair place and CP

If you have rooftop airconditioning
Check the hold down bolts ( should be four) and they should only be firm.
Check them every six months.

Good point to make - I checked our AC installation as instructed by the maker 6 months after we got the van and the bolts were all quite loose - the seal obviously settles in and everything beds down - gotta be done !

Have you looked on the roof lately might have a tear or been holed by a stick or branch falling.
Mine was quite surprised to see it in a new van.
Cheers

Its a big worry Mark!, There needs to be independant inspections at different stages of construction with these bloody vans!
Cheers Axle.

It'd be worth a good look over the roof to try and find the entry point. Can you remove the inner components of the hatch to see if that's where it's coming from?
If so, a bit of sealant on top might tide you over but a permanent fix will entail removal of the hatch, a thorough clean-up, and re-install with oodles of sealant.
You might be able to isolate the leak by
parking nose-up and then trying nose-down. The water will run downhill from its source and drip from any internal fittings in its path.
Alternatively, a cheap blue plastic tarp could be a good investment if rain is persisting.

Not sure if the nose-up/down idea made sense. What I mean is to elevate the end that has the speaker. If that no longer gets water in it, you know that the leak is more likely to be from the hatch. If it next starts to wet lights or speakers at the other end, you'll have a better idea of where it might be coming from.
