I was planning to head off tomorrow (Monday) for a few weeks wandering around the Dargo and Omeo area of the Alpine National Park. With all the wet weather would it be advisable to postpone the trip till better weather conditions? I am travelling alone (I do have a lot of 4X4 experience)? Appreciate some expert advice. Cheers.

Hi
WIth the rain a lot of the creeks and rivers will be up. Also, there could be alot of trees down, so a chainsaw would be advisable

Thanks Rob. I just checked the rainfall report and in that area there was only about 5-15mm of rain in the past 24hrs. The worst of the storm must have missed it. I think I will head on down. Good weather forecast for the rest of the week.
Cheers

Hey Fred,
Go for it!.. I've never told anyone to shy away. Just know your limits, your vehicles limits and use common sense.
Chainsaw, definitely!
Also, if a downhill looks dicey as to wether you'r get back up it, Be WARY!, continuing may be worse and what goes down must come up!..
A winch i would say would be a necessity.

Enjoy,
Dan

Thanks Dan for the advice,
Got the chainsaw packed and also have a winch. Heading off in the morning - looking forward to 2 weeks just me and the mountains.

Another vote for the chainsaw! We just did a 'small' loop around the Avon Wilderness today for five hours - needed the chainsaw four times and had to send SWMBO and No 1 son out a few times to clear the track of smaller trees!

The Avon was flowing faster than normal but not really higher.

My darling wife is going on a boat cruise so it looks like I will have to clear 'all' the trees myself. Damn!!!!

Hi All,
I'm interested to know your thoughts on the most difficult and challenging areas or tracks of the high country. I toured it for the first time over Xmas and was surprised to find so many easy tracks?

While nessesary, has anybody been caught and fined for using a chainsaw? Last I heard they were illegal to use in the parks, but at the same time, important to have.

You have a lot of time on your hands. Even if it rains for days, a good day of sun will let you get up most tracks and another day will see any rivers that are too high drop down at this time of year. I regularly go there for extended period periods and you can always get out if you can wait.
