Hi All,

I've found a few posts around Coil-rite airbags, here and on other forums. Several people advise Firestone Coil-rite kit 4129 for standard vehicles, and talk of spacers for a 2" lift.

There's a mob or two online in Australia now selling a part number "CR5042" kit saying that they are for a 2" lifted GU/GQ, but the part number doesn't appear in Firestone cattle dogs or application lists.

Can anyone who has specifically done what I am trying to do advise what they used?

I'm looking for a part number to suit a GU with a 2" lift that I can ring www.truckspring.com and order.

Alternatively if that isn't possible I need a source for a spacer & coilrites with part numbers please?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

G'day Grizzle.

Thanks. What are the spacers?

I'm envisaging a packer of some sort that packs the gap between the bottom mount & the bottom of the airbag. What are they made of & do they have a profile to them or are they a straight cylindrical shape?

Hi Dave,

They are a straight cylindrial hard rubber. They bolt through the bottom spring plate. I bought mine from Outback 4WD in Bayswater VIC for about $35. The came with bolts.

Forgot to check number but will confirm tonight

No worries Grizzle,

Thanks for that. I am curious though. If the 4129 bags are 11" tall, and the space in a 2" lifted GU is about 11.2" the spacer can't be that thick. Or is it?

Logic says it should be 2" if the kit is designed for a truck that was standard & you are putting it in a truck that has 2" extra space between the diffs & the body.

I'll give the mob you got yours from a call me thinks.

The airbags do bulge slightly through the springs so I imagine they would default a bit lower. From memory the spacers would be at least 1 1/2" possibly 2". The spacers are a standard thing so you should be able to get them from anywhere (Even Airbagman). Or you could get them made. They are a hard rubber compound but you could make them from anything. Remember in a normal height vehicle the bags are sitting on steel and are always pushing up against steel at the top.

Cheers

Hi Dave. The Aussie suppliers apply their own set of part numbers and this makes it difficult for you to correllate with the Firestone number. Probably to deter you from importing from the US. I bought a couple of Ride Rites recently from TruckSprings and they were half the price delivered!! Go figure. Best reference from someone who has the springs and get the Firestone number from their spring. Cheers, Leigh

For reference purposes for current contributors & other readers of this thread, I called.com last night and had a chat, I also called Firestone's tech support. Ten years ago this would have been cost prohibitive with the cost of international calls. You have to love internet phones!

Before calling I measured my Patrol which is a 2004 GU with the constant load King Springs 50mm lift.

The internal diameter of the spring is 140mm (5.5"), the height under normal vehicle load (ie. compressed) is 285mm (11.2") and there's 40mm clearance from top of spring height to the floor pan.

The internal diameter of the standard springs was also 140mm - apparently with some springs it can be reduced causing problems. I wouldn't be surprised. The crap Ironman springs I had in for 2 weeks had really thick wire which would have to reduce inside diameter.

Firestone wouldn't cross reference the Australian part numbers, but he would tell me that the part number for a spare airbag for a 4129 is a 6010, which in their application guide states is a 5.5" dia bag, 11" tall.

The tech support guy did acknowledge that with my measurements the 6010 would be the appropriate airbag with hardware in the 4129 kit.

www.Truckspring.com quoted about $155 inc postage to Australia. (but they are out of stock for a fortnight.)
www.4wheelparts.com have the 4129 kit for US$78.99 (on special at present) & they are getting back to me with a postage quote.

Given that the average online price in Oz seems to be around $330 (spread between $315 & $345) I reckon I'll get a pair.

Of course if I got two pair even with postage I could sell a pair for less than the Australian suppliers on ebay and get mine for free. That's just ridiculous.

Before the inevitable "you should buy it here" thread starts, I'm all for supporting an Aussie supplier but I'm sorry. When you can buy 4 of exactly the same thing in the US for the retail figure in Australia there's a price issue with the local stock. I've worked in the import industry in electronic components so I have more than a little bit of an idea about bulk freight costs & adding taxes & margin.

Warranty support doesn't even come into it, I can afford to buy 3 or 4 spare airbags and still break even.

Dave

PS. To the pedant who dobbed me in to the moderator for "advertising my website in my signature" blind freddie could have worked out I don't own geocaching.com if they'd had a look at it. If I owned geocaching.com I'd be living the high life, I'd be a rich american named Jeremy & I wouldn't be quibbling over a few hundred hard earned. Before you dob people in, at least make sure they are actually doing something wrong.

Hi All,

Just a followup before this gets archived.

I ended up ordering a set of 4129 Firestone Coil-rite's from http://www.4wheelparts.com/

I spoke to Firestone in the US and confirmed that the 4129's bags, the 6010 (11"x5" bag) are the correct one for the GU.

I then ordered a set of spacers off Outback4wd in Melbourne.

The kit cost about US$88 which was even cheaper than truckspring.com who didn't have them in stock anyway, and USPS to get it here took the total to US$112.

4wheelparts (Greg Dalmage was the guy I spoke to) were very helpful when I rang to explain the cost disparity between UPS & USPS, and quickly organised to USPS it to me while I was on the phone (VOIP - US phone calls cost stuff all).

Should be here in a week or so, if not better if past experience with USPS Air holds true. I've already got the spacers.

Considering I'm landing the Coil-rites for a third of the cost of locally sourced ones I don't give a damn about warranty, and what I've saved will buy enough fuel to get to somewhere around Woomera on the next trip, so it will benefit the local economy, just not a suspension parts supplier.

Thanks for your help.

Dave
