Dear All,

Anyone got any experience with CAT AGM batteries - see page 5 of

http://www.cat.com/cda/files/1386197/7/PEHJ0073-02.pdf

I got a quote from them today for a new cranking battery - model 175-4370 which was $144 +GST which I thought was very reasonable - so I thought I'd ask them tomorrow about their AGM range.

I am looking for a 100ah+ AGM to mount in the back of my Carry me Camper - but the way the specs of the AGM batteries are described, I'm not sure of the most suitable model. Can anyone help?

I thought maybe model no 250-0479 might be the go - just based on size and weight? I have the room for it.

Tim

Can't help you with you particular question, but I can say that I've been using Cat batteries for at least ten years. I currently have 3 of them which is as a result of other makes dying on me. When I started buying them they had a 10 year prorata warranty, one die at about 6 years service and the warranty came into play. The three that I have are either 700 or 770 cca's that fit into Troopy battery trays. As you say the prices are reasonable but come with a far better warranty than other batteries that only have a one or two year warranty.

Hi Rod,
when you say prices are reasonable what prices are you talking about.
I am keen to buy another for the cruiser but have been collecting info before I leap.
Cheers, Bruce.

Bruce you have to price for where you are located. I'm Perth and the last Cat battery (normal cranking) I brought was around the $150-$160 mark with 6 year prorata warranty.

Mate pretty much every ship sailing has a CAT battery to fire the auxilaries.

Never heard a bad word about them.

In fact i know a bloke who gets all the old ones off the boats that are deemed buggered, and takes them home charges them up and gets a few months out of them running fridges and stuff at the local markets.

I will be looking into these batteries i reckon, 10 year warranty cant go worng can ya. Hope there is a dealer somewhere near.

Cheers

Hello Tim,

looking at the performance table for their genereral purpose (which are NOT deep cycle) AGM, it looks like they did a boo boo which makes it hard to find the associated 20hr capacity rating.
In the column marked "amp hour @ 20 hour rate", this should read amp@20hr rate.
So whatever you find in this column are the currents you can draw over a 20hr period.
E.g. for the 250-0476, the current is 3.95A. Multiply this by 20hr and you get 79Ah.
Obviously, this is the only size available at this Melbourne source (ask them about the date stamp while you are at it).
Looking at the price of $272.00 inc GST, that's a whopping $3.44/Ah for a non deep cycle battery...

cheers, Peter

Whopping $3.44 /ah ? Not if you divide by the warranty period as well , more like 34c per ah over the expected life of the battery.

Be careful with the CAT warranty fine print. I'm aware of two cases where the warranty was not honoured because the batteries we not used 'for their intended use'. Make sure to ask if your intended use will meet the warranty conditions before you buy.

Hi All,
I work for the CAT dealer in Queensland and I won't spend any of my hard earned on a CAT battery to run accessories. I have done this once and I ran the battery flat only once and it would not hold a charge after that. The CAT batteries are great starting batteries but do not work so well as deep cycle. I have since spent $300 on an AGM and I am getting great service running my 40lt Engel.
