Hi All,
Just returned from Tassie after 7weeks of enjoyment and 8000klms in our new 79series and the only thing that disapointed us was the fuel consumption of around 5.5klms to the litre sitting on or under 100klms per hour.
Is there any news on the grape vine to improve this or do I just buy shares in BP Petrolium regards Alan.

Hi yu AJG
Glad another mainlander has come down under and enjoyed our little bit of paradise.
In relation to your fuel consumption, we have a 100 series V8 and we average about the same, travelling at anywhere from 85 to 95 kph.
Cheers
Baz

Hi Alan
I get a consistant 7.7 driving around
Melbourne in my 2008 76 series Wagon which is the same V8 motor.
You dont say how much you were carrying and if you have a bull bar and more importantly a roof rack and something on it. Weight and wind resistance will affect your fuel consumption of course.
Also as the motor beds down you might find some improvement.
Steve
PS I notice that you dont mention excessive oil consumption - was that noteworthy?

There are a few things that you can do.
If you have a bull bar, get rid of it.
If you have aircoditioning, get rid of it.
Any weight, in the back, get rid of it.
Those are things that I wouldn't do, but you could if you want better fuel economy.
Other factors, apart from weight include
Tyres: Change to highway/skinny tyres, increase the type pressure.
Engine tune
Driving technique, pick your conditions in which to drive: don't drive in headwinds, wait for that tail wind.
Like others have said, maybe time to get a portfolio of energy stocks

I'm about the same in the 79 cab chasis (Jan 2010). Been down under three during some reallly heavy conditions (towing as
well) but average on the highway around the 100 kph is mid 5's per litre.

G day Mick
The mighty Poootrol is up to 6.5 km/lt, towing, since I opened my wallet, and got new injectors, and the pump fixed.
I have heard that the V8 Diesels are a bit thirsty !
Does it depend on the status of the right foot, where our beloved members are just hoofing it, and not letting the turbo's and the torque do all the work ?
Cheers mate

Yep I was a consistent 6.5 to 7 kpl in the Pootrol. I'm not heavy footed (most of the time) and the mileage seems pretty consistent. Mind you, I'd like to do a tank with the camper off it just to see if there's much difference. God loves a V8 Bucky and so do I ;-)

hi
alan
john c
as i understand it tassie is very very hilly and also a windy place most of the time
so with those two factors alone your never going to get a flash consumption fuel figure in addition to the other things mentioned by others
when driving in above type terrain i have never got good figures either,no mater what the vehicle is
higher fuel consumption is par for the course one has to be happy with the average over all usage you have probably done as
well as anyone if the truth be known
when one has the power of a v8 and uses it to maintain speed
well the the tank does empty unless there is an exception to the real facts ???????
cheers

farm tractor
i think you did
well
you didnt say whether you were towing or not and if it had a canvas covered tray back or a slide-on camper ???

So travelling about 400 ks a day a saving of around $50 a day... based on 8 litres saved per 100ks at $1.40 a litre.. not small money for most.... Michael

Hi Alan,
Probably wont make you feel any better but I have just finished figures on my F250, 7.3lt V8...6.9km per litre.
It was black top driving and not heavily loaded but I was pleasantly surprised.
Makes me feel better anyway....lol
Besides, if you have had 7 weeks of enjoyment around Tassie what's another few km per litre amongst friends..

G'day Alan
Been in Tassie 4weeks now. If you find a straight road it won't last long and if it's flat you are probably in a car park. Maybe
check your economy again with normal city/ country driving. On most of the roads here (except main highways) I found it hard to maintain 90 let alone 100. Maybe time to ease up, or just enjoy the power, can't have both.
Cheers
Joel
ps luv Tassie.

Hello Allan and all, I bought a 2007 VDJ79 series cab chassis Diesel V8 and keep accurate fuel fill records. I have never got the figures that Toyota say, probably no one can.
The worse, towing my 2+ tonne van, 19L/100km, 5.26 k/l, (not on the whole two tanks full but the furthest I have towed in one go). The best, 12.25L/100, 8.16k/l. Recently, from Pt Pirie, SA, to Outer
Melbourne via
Mildura, 100kPH on the highway, bit of load on the tray, 13.49L/100, 7.41k/l. I guess this is the average for most.
Based on a 4 month trip, NSW-Victoria, we averaged 15.94 L100, 6.27k/l, at 52% towing over 9806km. Still much better than our premium petrol Pajero that on similar trips averaged around the 18 plus litres. Thus saving a fair bit on fuel costs but I would prefer to drive the Pajero over that distance, however, needs must.

I have the same vehicle with the previous TD motor - just my observations over 6 years. Tyres, weight and cruising speed make the most difference.
265's use 0.5 l/100k more than splits
285's add another 0.5 l/100k
Muddies add another 0.5 l/100k over easy rolling A/T's
2" Lift adds 0.5l/100k
Added the canopy (extra weight and a bit of bulk) adds 1-2 l/100k - vehicle at GVM 3300kg.
Tow the Tvan adds 1-1.5 l/100k
On the other side of the ledger, the 3" exhaust subtracts about 1 l/100k on
mine.
With an empty tray when new I easily got the quoted factory 11.6 l/100k
These days towing the Tvan at 100kph I get about 15 l/100k.

Hi Alan
when something is shaped like a brick and has a v8 in it and hit the scales at somewhere around 3tons loaded it will use Fuel at a alarming rate no getting over that but i would say that sounds a bit high maybe in time it will improve
