Hi guys,

I'm new here so if Ive done this wrong can someone please let me know?

So was cleaning the rear drum brakes on my 96 hilux when i realised that the lsd wasnt working properly. With both wheels off the ground i can spin the right wheel and left doesnt turn, but when i turn the left wheel the right wheel will spin the same way(which is what should happen right?) any help or ideas?

Thanks Heaps,

Jared

An LSD is a "torque biassing" device. It depends on there being torque on both wheels ie both wheels have to have resistance ie be on the ground. Where one wheel spins the torque is biassed to the other wheel up to a set % usually 30% .

If one wheel is off the ground the LSD will not send torque to the other wheel.
I am talking about conventiuonal LSDs here . There are others that work differently. The test was not really valid. A better test would be to put one wheel on grass and the other on bitumin and see if you can pull away briskly.
BTW many people claim Toyota LSDs quickly wear out and need rebuilding after a low mileage.

You dont have a problem, Toyota LSD are one of the poorest on the market.

The only thing you can do is regularly change the oil using good quality LSD oil.

the other trick is to take it to a diff place and get them to tighten the hell out of it, will whine a bit be you will get a better milage from it.

x2 above, regularly change the diff oil and put the good stuff in.

preventative maintenace.

diff bloke i once new told me that the diff oil oxidises after time and that will cause premature wear!!!

Jared,
I have a '96 hilux aswell. I bought it second hand with 55,000km on it 11 years ago, the owner said it did very little off road work.
I was at a mates place who lived on a very steep block of land. I tried driving up the grassy slope and just one wheel was spinning. Hilux LSD's are hopeless. I replaced it with a Detroit Trutrac LSD. Works a treat after 340,000km and still going strong. When i got mine it was $900 fitted.

I have been looking at the trutrac LSD for my landcruiser. These are in my opinion the best option for a new LSD. They have a mechanical worm gear driven LSD so no wear plates to ever be replaced. Cost is around $2000 fitted. Available from opposite lock stores.

Serendipity,

I just made a few calls and can get either a trutrac lsd or detroit locker fitted for $1200 from a local diff repair center if I pull out the diff centre. Called opposite lock and they wanted $1980. Maybe you should look into some diff centres, it may work out cheaper for you even if you dont pull out the diff centre.

seems like one side is worn more than the other, as a mechanic the way we norm test them is to have them in the air, and rotate the axle, both should turn in the same direction, from etheir side, from what ur describing id say that one side is worn, left normally wear first due to cornering, and wheel spin being generally more to that side.

Just read your post, first of all
ensure that you always use the correct oil ie LSD oil and do not overfill.
to correctly check if the LSD is operating correctly, jack up one wheel and measure the torque required to get the wheel to rotate, usually use one of those scale type tension wrenches. Check with result with the manual.
THe LSD does not always lock as the wheels need to turn at diferent speeds when cornering, hence there will always be some slippage.
As fas a tightening the heck out of it, not sure what is meant, the only adjusments are pinion depth, crownwheel carrier bearing preload, crownwheel backlash and pinion brg preload.
Before spending big money, go to a specialist and have it checked.

Hi Burto

I had my toyota LSD tightened. They replaced the wear disks and then put a 15000 shim on either side. Works really well now.

I would have liked to afford a trutrac LSD but the budget just was not that good.

Cheers

David

Good to hear that you have the problem sorted out, an extra shim will place a bigger load on the thrust plates so increasing the torque required to allow the wheel to slip.
In regards to toyota LSD being weak, I Have just my diff reraced and the LSD wear components replaced, mine is a 62 series, 21 years young with 520000k's on the clock. Yes I do go bush,

I left the diff centre with the repairer, he rang me later to tell me that you couldn't find the cause of the whine and that he didn't know what i was chasing, I thanked him and let him know that i was overhauling the diff purely on mileage not because there was a problem. Total cost $550.00
Anyway i am off to Tassie for a month in three weeks, then a slow 2 week trip from Melbourne to Taree.
Regards
