G'Day from down south, I am just wondering what most dual axle caravans are using for there vans say 20' foot, I currently drive a Toyota 200 series ,and have been told it is better to use 16"x8" wheels as the buying of tyres are easier to get, for that size rim than 18"x8" and a lot more expensive, BFG 265/75R16 tyres have also been suggested.
Any comments would be much appreciated. Regards " H "

Hi Harry,
All depends where you are going? If only on the blacktop and not that remote, then go with the smaller (cheaper) size. But if going off-road or a long way from any sort of reasonable sized
population centre, then much better to match your vehicle and van wheels so you can share spares. Also allows for tyre rotation between van and vehicle.
When I got my van, I went to the expense of genuine 200 alloy rims so I can swap between van and vehicle. Currently there is no aftermarket rim available for the 200 that has a high enough load rating to be legally used on the 200 (insurance!). Also note that a 17" rim is the smallest that can fit on a 200, so if you did go to a 15" or 16" you couldn't use them on the 200 even in an emergency.
Best, most economical, option IMHO is to get the geniune steel 200 rims (only ~$140ea) as they have the load rating so can be used on the 200 if required. May not look as good as the mags but cheaper and meets the load rating requirements.
Cheers
Captain

Hi, Captain,
Thanks for your input, I've taken that on board, I am now more confused than before.
My car is a 200 Sahara v8 twin turbo with a new to be built Trakmaster 21' but would love to be able to fit a set of rims that will look similar to the 200 toyota but with 16"x 8" rims which would look better than the standard white steel rims, if we are to spend the money on a trakmaster van it should look the part ?
Thanks again and happy travelling hope to see you some where in our travels.
Regards " H "

Just finished my shopping list for the chassis of my new gooseneck.
Speedy Territory 16"x7" with 0 offset have high load rating for a mag wheel and are around $170. I use LT 215/85 16 or LT 235/85/16 with around 1300Kg load rating per tyre. The stud pattern is LC 6 bolt. I made this compromise because the stud pattern and size is more popular in OZ. Originally I wanted to use my US dually wheels but it is extremely hard to get an axle or stub axle made for 8 lug hubs and disc brakes .. only drum brakes .. and I do hate drum brakes.
I think 16x7 or 16x8 is the most popular and 265/75/16 is probably the most popular size for the larger vans. I buy all tyres from the US now since I had good results with my BFG MT 255/85 16 KM2s and saved a bundle including shipping from the US.
have fun
