as others say do it, you can turn off at Pine Creek and do the "loop" to Darwin and see Litchfeild on the way back, that way you dont cover your tracks again, it is well worth it..Cheers

If your driving that far, you should go there as it's a long way to get back there and you might regret it later.
You should make up your own mind. People have told me a place is crap and I've found it OK. People have raved about Chilli Beach and I've been to better places.
Make sure that you go to Litchfield anyway.
Have a good trip

Hi Wayne, Kakadu is huge and worth seeing. You can do plane flights from $200 each or heli flights $299 per person. We have done the heli flights and are worth the money to see the huge scale of the place.Kakadu charges $25.00 per person with kids free.Litchfield is also a must. Nice to have a swim at Berry springs or do it at Mataranka on the way up. Kids love going to Crocodilius park in darwin.

Mate theres heaps to see and do on the way. Sorry for quick and vague reply we have got some wet weather here tonight, just gone under cyclone warning
cheers Troy

Wayne,

Definitely worth the trip, Kakadu is one of those places that you need to experience, it is huge, has great rock art sites, wild life and birds you can see up close especially on the Yellow Waters cruise (a must) and some marvelous places to walk and camp at. Gumlom at the southern end of the park is wonderful.

We were there last July as well as Litchfield (do the Reyolds River track if you get time, a couple of great spots down there)

If you are interested I've posted some blogs of our trip. "Darwin via the Dirt" We returned via the Gulf.

The Top End is a great place with lots to do, you will enjoy it I'm sure

Regards

Mike.

Ps We have been to Kakadu 3 times now. - Most of the Kakadon'ts would have made only a flying visit.

Have to agree with your Kakadon'ts comment. If you don't get off the bitumen highway, you don't see Kakadu. We enjoyed our time there, especially the Yellow Waters Cruise. I say do Kakadu.

Hi Wayne

We were told the same don't bother with Kakadu Litchfield is much better
we loved both Kakadu and Litchfield and are planning to go back one day.
No matter where you travel in this great country every place has its own
character, it would be pretty boring if every place was exactly the same
enjoy your trip and let us know your thoughts on Kakadu.
Cheers

DO DO DO

When we were touring and a long way from the North, people were saying Kakadon't - but the closer we got, the more and stronger the KakaDOOOOs, from people who had actually been there! The only negative from people who had been there was a couple with a huge on road caravan who found the bitumen access road through the park fairly boring. Hence they didn't really see anything except the Yellow Waters Cruise that they went specifically for, and they did enjoy that. We spent almost two weeks there and the days were all full on, and we only saw the main features.

Ye, we too toured Litchfield on the return leg and spent three busy days there.

Spot on MH, the kakadont's must surely be 2wd owners who only stick to the main road. We spent over 3 weeks in there but that included shady camp and surrounds and loved it. Cant wait to get back to do it again.

It's a big Kakadooo from me. I have also learnt to ignore all advice whether for or against and go to places anyway. I like to form my own opinion.

My wife who was not a keen caravaner says that she didn't start to enjoy our trip until we got to Kakadu.

We stayed for nearly two weeks and really enjoyed it.

Did an hours flight, went to Norlangie and Ebur, Did Yellow waters and ate

marvelous food from the bakery at Jabiru. Quaint old store near Ebur.

Window over the Wetlands was one of the best displays we saw anywhere.

Stayed at Lakeview park in Jabiru Great friendly park.

G'day Wayne, Yeah, some like to knock Kakadu, maybe tall poppy syndrome, but I think it's worth visiting. Would love to see it in The Wet. It's a long way to go so best if you can combine it with some other good sightseeing.

And how's the four-wheeling going mate? Bit more leisurely than the past?

Cheers

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Looks like we will go to Kakadu for a look see.

Allan: Yep taking it easy these days. I fitted a HD-T engine to the old girl just for a bit more get up and go. Made a heap of difference when towing.

Hi Wayne,

Everyone has an opinion on everything especially on Kakadu.

We (including granddaughters 11 & 15) thought it was fabulous. Try to get to Jim Jim and Twin Falls. If you're not happy to drive there yourself treat yourself to a trip with Top End Tours, your won't regret it. Go to Ubirr (pronounced Oobeer) and climb to the top and be amazed. Our 15 yo exclaimed "Wow, Jurasic Park!". So many sights to see, you need several visits with time to absorb it all in between.

Go!

Cheers,
Min

definately a must do. we did it 15 years ago in a commodore towing a wind up jayco. wouldnt have missed it for quids. only downside was we hit a kangaroo and it buggered the aircon and we had no aircon for another 14 years. still worth every minute.

We loved it. The rock art incredible, the escarpments beautiful, let the mind wonder (when you're actually there) to the time when Europeans weren't there and you can picture it. What I can't understand is the comparison to Litchfield because they're so different. It's like comparing rock music to opera, each has it's own good points but they're not the same so you can't compare.

I remember when we were camped in Karijini and the couple next to us hated it, they couldn't stop complaining about how terrible it was. We were in disbelief and we fell in love with it..no had we met these people earlier on, it certainly would've made us think twice about going there.

Cheers,

Mark.

Make sure that you go to Cahill's Crossing at high tide on the East Alligator river near Ubirr. There are 6 to 10 salt water crocodiles on each side of the causeway and when the water is over the causeway the fish jump across and the crocodiles get into a feeding frenzy. Ask a local about the tides.
For some reason this has not been widely publicised.
If you relax at a faster pace you can get more relaxation in for a given time.
