We are considering buying a Nissan Navara 2007 D40 dual cab with tray and selling the 2007 Patrol wagon. We are concerned that the Navara will not be as stable and too light in the rear for towing a 20ft van. We find the patrol diesel 3.0l is a fuel guzzler too. Please let us know your comments.

Get the Patrol.
Anything is thirsty towing a reasonably heavy van.
Eg My Cruiser does 10l per 100k solo and 17.5l per 100k when towing.
Patrol 3.0 would be about the same or at least mine was before I sold it.
Far better to have a bit of weight in front of the van.

I too agree the Patrol (and I own a 2008 D40) - you will use just as much if not more fuel towing a 20foot van around with a D40. Fuel usage is directly related to the amount of work the car has to do (and a bunch of other things as
well) - but given any vehicle and load it up and the fuel usage will climb.

Aren't they the same motors?
Why would one use more fuel

The earlier D22 Navara had a detuned ZD30 3.0ltr but the D40 and the current generation of D22 have the 2.5CRDI

Jodi,
Provided the Nissan is not automatic it has a higher towing capacity then the Navara from my readings. You also need to consider the weight of your loaded van.
Cheers,

Jodi,
We have an 07 Navara D40 diesel auto and tow a 21ft- 2.5 tonne van with it.
Have towed it about 35,000ks without any problems.
Fuel consumption is 18.5litres per 100ks towing 85-90kph, always in 4th gear.
We find the Navara to be a very stable unit.
The first 20,000ks towing was with the standard
suspension - no problems - then we upgraded the
suspension so we could do the CSR last year and find that it is even more stable than before.
Jeff.
