Hi All,
Looking at a trip to Central Australia in September this year & on the way round want to do a trip over to
Kangaroo Island. I will be towing a camper trailer, but looking at the ferry costs from the mainland to to
Kangaroo Island, I would prefer to leave the trailer & just take a tent over for a couple of days.
Does anyone know of any options of storing the trailer on the maniland or would I be better off setting it up in a caravan park for a couple of days - which would still be cheaper than ferry costs? I'm sure I'm not the only person who has considered this, so hopefully there is an option I am not aware of?
All help appreciated :)
Cheers,

Jo,
I'd also get in touch with Sealink and ask if they have secure storage facilities.
Cheers,
Di and Bruce

Hi Jo
We are heading over there for 9 days in just under a months time. Yes there is a secure compound at
Cape Jervis and it will be a lot cheaper leaving your camper there, rather than taking it over. The fees are worked out on a daily basis, getting cheaper per day the longer the trailer is there. Do yourself justice and make your stay longer, as the Island is bigger than you think.
These are the current fees
$12 for 1 Day
$17 for 2 Days
$26 for 3 Days
$33 for 4 Days
Another very important thing to do is pre book with Sealink direct and book at least 1 nights accommodation and you will save heaps, their number is 13 13 01.
These are the current usual prices
$88 return per Adult.
$176 return for vehicles under 5 metres.
The above adds up to $352
We booked direct with them the above including the first 2 nights at
Penneshaw with power at the Caravan Park for $308 all up. By doing that we have saved $104 with is better in your pocket.
This gives you something to think about.
Cheers
Stephen

Per kilometre, the highest ferry fares in the world. Pure extortion. They need competition.

$56Canadian from Vancouver to Victoria B.C in the biggest RV you can climb into and $8 per passenger. Takes just over an hour so it's more than 16NM that the KI ferry travels.
Admit the
population is different but this route has been a rip off the last 40 years that I lived in SA. It was cheaper to fly with Ansett by Fokker.

So Peter E1, you are going to try and tell me that you can fly return to KI for less than $88.00. In case you are talking about "years ago" I know the return ferry for just a passenger was only $25.00. You could never fly that cheap!

Hi Jo
I will do a blog and post lots of photos. Also I forget to mention it is also a good idea to purchase a
Kangaroo Island Tour Pass. The pass is for the National park and will get you into all the major National Parks tourist attractions, and is valid for 12 months. Once again when you do your sums, you only have to go the major
places once and you have already saved money.
Cheers
Stephen

G'day Jo
This will not help you because you are planning to travel in September but it may be useful information for others. SeaLink will provide free transport to
Kangaroo Island & return for camper trailers & caravans between 24 April & 30 June, as they did last year. This reduces the cost at that time of the year but I agree that the ferry costs overall are quite high. However, as Stephen mentioned, there is a lot to see & experience on KI.
Regards
Tommy

We did the trip in early December 2010. We left our caravan in Wirrina Cove Resort caravan park (approx 35kms to ferry) - cost us $10 for the week !!! And very nice people there too!!
If you have a Big 4
Membership, you can save 25% off the SeaLink Ferry - online bookings only (not over phone).
Whilst you're there, enjoy some Cliffords
Farm honey icecream for us - super yum !!!
