My OEM in-dash DVD system starts skipping after about 5 mins when playing CDs, so its no good for listening to music on CD.
Does anyone know if an iPod connector can be fitted to these units?
Also, I've seen some after-market in-dash GPS/DVD systems on ebay for around $550 which seem to do everything. Are they a good replacement option for the original unit??

Regarding the cheap Chinese GPS/DVD systems, they do everything but nothing particularly
well. If you can put up with a very basic interface (that looks like it's designed by a committee) and no updates ever (they want you to buy a new one) then they work OK.
Just don't expect any service from the supplier.

One of our sons got one of those units and it has one big problem. You cannot listen to any entertainment if the mapping (OziCE) is displayed. Multi tasking is totally RS. Not even the local FM radio or a CD. To say he is cheesed off when he saw ours playing the music from the Walkman is an understatement. We got the VMS several years back. Very costly - YES.
It may be worth buying it from a
shop where you can sit and talk and sort out problems and warranties etc.

G'day, GPS/DVD from ebay is a great unit, have had one for a while now. Only thing I found and I don't know if it a fault with
mine, but the Ipod doesn't charge as you use it. Haven't chased that up as yet. For the money a very good upgrade.

John,
one of the units on ebay (from elinz) has a built-in DV-B TV tuner. Does yours have this, and if so, does it work
well and do you consider it a good feature?

The only way I know is to buy a FM transmitter which will allow you to play the Ipod through the stereo. Dick Smith sell them for about $40 or so.
Our friends bought an Ipod and thats how we connected it. Plays out of the earphone socket.
Also did the same with my netbook which had 120gig of music on it.

I purchased and self-installed an iPod cable to my factory system in a 2005 Toyota Prado.
The cable was supplied by 'Car iPod Cables' and I used this one -

I followed a guide from a PradoPoint member (Stewy 08 D4D) which I have made available here -

I am extremely happy with the 'new' system and being able to play the iPod through the car stereo. I have run the cable through to the glovebox and the iPod lives in there.
I hope this helps,
Scott

Thanks Scott, I was hoping that was possible!
I'm happy with the unit in every other respect, so being able to play from an iPod will make all the difference in the world.
Appreciate your help!

Thanks everyone, appreciate the responses.
It's good to hear someone's positive experience of the ebay GPS/DVD systems. It remains an option down the track.
There's a new model out that looks a bit nicer than the other brand on ebay. It has Nov 2010 maps and uses the SiRF IV processor. See

Will try an iPod plug to begin with and keep an iPod permanently in the glove box.

Seems I'm back to square one.
The iPod connector Scott recommends is NOT compatible with Sat Nav units, which of course what I have in the Sahara.
I already use an FM transmitter but the sound quality is not great.
Any wired solutions out there??

Graham H -
mine doesn't play DVDs either. The GPS maps are on DVD, so its technically a DVD player, but you are right. (although a simple modification can be made and it will play movie DVDs too - not sure if this is legal....or helpful!)

Hi, I purchased a simple cable from either DSE or JB for about $12.00,plugs into Aux socket in radio and earphone socket in Ipod, doesn't charge but for most applications is more than sufficient,

Well mine is a 2005 and hasnt got the Aux input so had to use the FM way.
Not much good playing movies as it hasnt got a screen LOL
Would like to know how to do that as a DVD is completely different to a CD in the way it is written.
Data is Ok but a movie is a different format.
Cheers

Most older cars don't have aux sockets. Otherwise it would be easy.

Try here:

Maintains the touch screen interface. You will pay for it though (waiting for my birthday on this one).
Matt.

Interesting.
Mine is an '08 Prado Grande, so will make sure it is compatible before I commit the cash. Appreciate the heads up.
Matt.

Be very wary of some of the links provided here, friend of
mine ordered a Soundlinq Ipod adapter kit for his 2003 Sahara and the kit is not compatible. It appears the Sahara may use a Lexus front end and the kit will not plug into the head unit, he has had no luck getting around the issue. If anyone has successfuly done so please let me know so I can pass this onto him.

Ok, found one that doesn't cost the earth, and they confirm its compatible with the SatNav stereo in the Sahara.
Here's the link:
http://www.cushieaudio.com.au/vehicles/toyota.html
It's called i2-TOY. They guarantee it will work with all Toyotas, have a 30-day money back guarantee, a 12 month replacement warranty and full support.
Let's see how it goes...
