Goggle maps list travel times for the Carpentaria and Tablelands Hwys between
Daly Waters and
Barkly Homestead which equate to an average speed of 50 kmh. As these are sealed roads although probaly narrow, I was wondering if there is a reason for the low average speed.
Fyi I plan to travel this route in early June and will not be towing.

Subaru Softie,
Travelled that road in 2009 with a van attached and an average of 50kph would be about right.
The Carpentaria Hwy was not to bad with only about 1/4 of it single lane and the road was pretty good.
The Tablelands Hwy was far different with most of it single lane and very rough for a sealed road - felt like it was laid straight across the paddocks with very little or very bad foundations. Friends with us had a dog and after the first section - from Barkly RH to Brunett Downs
Rest area it took a lot of coxing to get it back into the car.
Would not go this way again, better to go via Three Ways.
Fuel was also a rip off at
Cape Crawford as petrol was $1.85 and diesel $2.35??
Jeff.

From our 2009 trip, Carpentaria was normal travel speed for us, and a bit slower on the rough patches of the Tablelands. Also being single lane, you need to slow down and pull off if you meet road trains. We were towing which made a difference on the degraded parts which may not affect you not towing.
