Went across that way last year and cant think of anything that stands out.
Its a long boring drive in my opinion especially from Mt Isa to Charters Towers.
There is a good camp at Camooweal - as you approach Camooweal turn south down a dirt track, between the two concrete bridges, that leads toward the stockyards and you will see others camped by the river (no facilities) Not in CAW book.
Some of those roadside camps are very exposed and windy but OK for overnight.
Campaspe River camp is a good one CAW4 No'287

There is also a Dinosaur exhibit at Richmond worth a looksee - about 2 hrs worth.

Give Cartoscope a ring and ask what maps they have for this trip.

This mapping co makes great tourist maps for many areas of Australia.
If they cannot supply you direct they may know where to get them.

Their maps give great info on many sites to see and places to camp.

And usually they are free.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Willow,
there are heaps of interestingplaces near the Barkley it just depends how far you want to travel of it.
1. Caves around Cammoweal.
2. To the north Lawn hill.
3. Pick up a map in The Isa for the old mines and tracks between Isa and the Curry.
4. Down through the Selwyn Ranges to the old kuridala mine and amethyst diggings. See the info mob in the Curry.
5. Julia Creek, stay and enjoy a beer or ten with the locals at Gannons pub and say hello to Julia who is lovely lady.
6. Have a look at the Dinosaur's in Richmond.
7. Go to Porcupine gorge.
8. Check out the old mining in the Towers, Venus Battery is a must.

Have a good trip
