hi all, i'm new to 4wd's and the whole scene but have heard a lot concerning the navara d40 clutch. down the track i wish to travel oz with a camper trailer so i'm a bit weary of problems in the middle of no where. obviously the hilux was my first choice but the price tag is scary. any comments appreciated : )

Hi Athdaddy, bought 2010 Navara D40 d/cab 2.5 last year. my research yielded same reservations so bought auto as I will be towing 2.7 tonne van this yr. It was interesting when the local Nissan dealer told my brother in law that he would not sell him a manual Navara to tow a 2.8-3 tonne builders trailer. I don't think the
well discussed clutch issue is only restricted to Navaras-most makes mention it on forums.
Good luck with your research.
Ian

thanks Ian, i'm interested in getting a manual as i love driving them so hopefully i can get some feed back on them. i think camper trailers are around 800kgs give or take so i'm hoping people on here are doing similar at the moment and can shed some light : )

I think most of the problem is
hill take offs, small diesel, no boost and hi revs to get them moving just burns out the clutch.
800 kilos should be ok one would imagine.

A highish ratio in first gear is problematic for most of the dual cab T/D Utes on the market. Certainly Mazda/Ford, Nissan and Holden. There's not a lot you can do about it. They have bugger all torque at low engine revs and it's hard to get them off the line.
Like yourself, i am a manual fan. I prefer to drive manuals but you sure do get used to an auto pretty quickly....

Our manual D40 diesel tows a 1.5 tonne AORC Odyssey.
Getting off the line uphill can be tricky, especially off road.
If I had to buy again I go the auto.
