Hi all looking to travel from Broome down the West coast and then along south coast ending up in Adelaide/Melbourne. Can go the other way though. What to buy/rent? we have probably 10 weeks to do the trip and only 2 of us betwen December and February later this year. Renting a decent van with toilet will cost approx $10000. Do we really need a campervan or go for a stationwagon staying at decent campsites/motels? Thanks for any suggestions.

There are many options for a trip like this.

The equipment you decide to use is determined by a whole bunch of compromises. What is most important to you? Do you want to make it a cheap trip, or a luxurious one? Or do you want to find a balance of the two?

A camper would be comfortable, if you get the right one. It won't cost you much in terms of travel times, probably nothing worth worrying about. But it will cost fuel to tow the camper.

You could use a tent. There are plenty on the market that are quick and easy to set up, provide a reasonable standard of accommodation and are light to carry. Set up will be slower than with a good camper but for the $1000 you would spend on hire you could own a really nice set up for 2 people.

The next alternative is a swag. I love them. They are quick and easy to set up, provide enormous flexibility and they are cheap. If you need shade/shelter in addition to your swag it is pretty easy to set up a tarp across the top of your car.

There are pros and cons to each option you just need to work out the one that best suits you and your travelling companion.

May also need to be cyclone proof for travel at that time of year. Could also be hot.

Will be very hot and probably very wet.
Assuming your flying to Broome?
Have you made contact in Broome to see what's available to hire?? you may not have much of a choice that time of year as it's the off season and not a lot of activity up there then.

Jeff.

Thanks for your replies. Weather certainly seems to be an issue and an air conditioned vehicle seems essential. I presume the roads are good enough for a normal 2 wheel drive rather than needing a 4 wd?
